Umbrella or softbox for main light

I have a cheapbay umbrella and a lastolite ezybox hotshoe just delivered (haven't opened it as I'm at work).

Which one should I use as main and fill light?

I've been trying google, but haven't found an answer so I'm here again asking for everyone's opinion/help.

How big are both the light sources?

I would use the bigger light source, therefore if the umbrella is 32" but the softbox is 40" i would use the softbox as the main and then the other as fill.

Just experiment.
Use whatever works, i.e. whatever produces the effect you want.
It doesn't follow that a key light should be hard, or soft, or in any particular place. The whole idea of studio lighting is that you can make the light whatever you want it to be, and whatever suits the subject.
