Umberella

I bought myself a cheapo light set with umberellas and a backdrop stand just for portraits of wife, family etc and i assumed the light was in front of the brolly and it reflected back to the subject , or doesn`t it matter?

It depends on the umbrella, some are shoot through and some are reflective. You can bounce light off a shoot through but obviously you'll lose some light.
