Ultra-Wide Zoom for Canon Full Frame

Hi folks,

I'm looking for recommendations for an ultra-wide angle zoom for a Canon 5D, primarily for landscape photography.

On a 40D, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm was my choice of lens, but obviously can't use it on a full frame 5D.

Naturally, I considered the EF 17-40mm offering from Canon, but didn't want to exclude any alternatives before asking around.

I have the canon 17-40 and the canon 16-35 and use both on a 5D, if you can afford the extra go for the 16-35, it's a lovely lens and has very little distortion compared to the 17-40, that said the 17-40 is still a nice lens for the money.
There are several other makes around that focal length but have never tried them so can't say what they are like.

Can I ask why you use both lenses and what you consider to be the key differences between them besides the price?
 
I can't answer for the 17-40, but I can vouch for the 16-35 L. I would not suggest a 2nd hand mk1, the mk2 is worth the extra.It may be expensive, but it is excellent. I am also lucky enough to have a Siggy 14mm f2.8 which is no longer produced, but if you could find one 2nd hand I'd snap it up. It's too wide for a lot of stuff, but just occasionally there's nothing else short of stitching.

I have a 17-40L and a 12-24 Sigma. Fortunately my Sigma seems to be a sharp one across the full frame. There is little wider than this available, and it becomes a little habitual to use it.
 
The key differences between them for me is the lack of distortion on the 16-35, but the 17-40 is the sharper of the 2, although I only got the 16-35 the other day I used it to take a shot that I wasn't happy with using the 17-40 due to distortion and the difference in the distortion was considerable.

I'm just reading up on the Sigma 12-24 now. How do you feel the two lenses compare with each other? Image quality and sharpness across the frame would be my main criteria.
 
Doesn't the Siggy vignette on the 5D, Ed? I hadn't realised it was full frame, or am I confusing it with a wider Siggy zoom?

There is some very slight fall off at light at the edges due to the very wide angle of view, but I personally like that, and in my printing days used to introduce it artificially to concentrate the interest onto the subject.

I can't remember the last time I used the 17-40L it's either the Siggy or my 24-70L

Hmmm ... Ultra-wide-angle zoom options.

* Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II - a stop faster than the 17-40, obviously, and that probably accounts for much of the price difference. My (possibly ill-informed) impression is that most copies of the 16-35 are sharper than most copies of the 17-40, but I suspect you might not notice the difference in the real world.

* Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 G ED - the best ultra-wide available, full stop. Nikon have raised the bar so much with this lens, and the good news is that you can use it on a Canon with a suitable adapter.

* Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM - the widest you can go on full-frame. Needs to be stopped down a bit, but remarkably free from distortion and unbelievably wide.
 
I have the 16-35mm Mk I and the 12-24mm. Stopped down, the former is lovely - it has a somewhat mushy bokeh when wide open, though :). The 12-24mm is insanely wide on a 5D - you can practically see behind yourself.

A great lens for the paranoid! :lol:

The 16-35mm and Nikon 14-24mm, which undeniably produces some amazing shots, both cost more than I want to spend (at least at new prices).

I've read so many mixed reviews on both the 17-40L and Sigma 12-24. :thinking:

I liked using my polariser and ND filters on the EF-S 10-22. I think I would miss them with the Sigma.

That is one thing I do miss, actually. With the miniature hood in place on the Sigma (which has the thread for filters), the frame on a 5D becomes a porthole! There are some DIY fixes people have put in place to use the 100mm (Z-series?) Cokins with it, but they are unwieldy to say the least!

The Nikon option on a Canon body sounds interesting. The widest I currently have is the 17-40L and I would like to go wider, is this an option worth considering on a 40D? How much is the adaptor and does that introduce any compromises I wonder?

Here's some info on the Nikon/Canon adapter.

Have you considered the EF-S 10-22mm for your 40D?
