Hi,

Ok can't get the lens below now as needs to work on the 5D and 50D.

I'm looking for a lens in the range of 17mm ish.

I know about the 17-40mm L, was originally looking for an Image stabilized one.

Does anyone have this lens?

Whats there thoughts on it? It would be getting used mainly on a 5D but also on a 50D

Thanks

I have the non-VC version, and it's my favourite lens. Just awesome really, and I'd imagine the VC is ever better. However, it won't work on your 5D, it's for crop sensors only I'm afraid. It should be a blinder on the 50D, but a non-starter on the 5D.

Chris

Noooooooooo

Is there any other lens apart from the 17-40mm L that I should consider?

If you've got £1129.00 burning a hole in your pocket, there's the 16-35 f/2.8?! Otherwise the 17-40 is probably your best bet, or there's a tamron equivalent that might be of some interest?

What tamron one is compatible?

I've got the 17-40mm f4 and it's a belter! :)

Why would you need IS on a lens that wide? IS is generally used to stabilise long lenses that are prone to all sorts of wobble. I don't ectually think it is needed at anything under about 50mm! :)

The 17-40mm is fantastic especially in controlling chromatic aberration and flare.

I took this one on it and it's blown up OK :)

The one on the wall? was that with the 17-40L and what body?

IS is just for convience at drama events in poor light.

I know I can get the 17-40 for about £400, but was looking to get something about 1/2 that at the minute.

How do you know what sigma and tamron lens work with FF?

I know I need EF lens from canon.

One of the reasons for IS is that my hands are very unsteady, and I feel more confident with the IS/OS/VC, and its not always possible for fast shutter, or High iso or tripod.

For sigma a DG lens will work full frame - with 40mm you would only need 1/40 to avoid camera shake but that wont stop subject blur if the subject is moving nor would IS.

I don't understand...The Canon 17-40mm is a FF lens that will work on APS-C (as a 27-64mm)

You could always go for the Sigma 12-24mm, it'll work on APS-C (as 19-38mm) and FF. I also have a Canon 20-35mm which gives 32-56mm on APS-C and is available used starting at about £160.

The sigma 12-24mm is too expensive at the moment. Looking at the older sigma EX 17-35 f2.8/4 on evilbay at the moment.

If you're looking on ebay have a look at 19-35mm, there's a lens that's badged up as Vivitar, Cosina, Tokina and possibly more...all the same lens though I think...

A couple of people on another forum have them and say that they give good results. I think that they start at about £80.

Personally i'd save for longer rather than sticking a cheap bit of glass like that on the front of a 5D and they be even worse on a 50D

Hmmm.

I'm not too sure that quality is as directly and simply related to price as that....and some do report good results.

the Canon 16 - 35 is super sharp and a great lens ...:-)

If they were good and produced good images on the likes of a 5D & 50D they would not be £80.00 ....belive me demand would push the price right up ;)

for cheapsies a sigma 15-30 is pretty good and works on the 5d, one a similar price to my tammy in the classifieds. I just bought one for my 5dII but the cam isn't here yet so haven't tested it

Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4? I've seen full res samples on D3 (somewhere on flickr) and they look fine, far better than Sigma.

We need to make petition for Tokina to get us 11-16mm f/2.8 FF equivalent! 20-35mm f/2.8 was great but is now quite dated and very rare.

I'm watching a sigma EX 17-35 f2.8/4 at the moment, but can't find the tamron version on ebay.

the other 17-35's might be worth a go at that price.

If you have to get sigma, then 15-30mm was a much better lens than their 17-35mm (some of them might not even work with dSLRs)

its also more than double the price though. Which for an experiment to see if I like a 17mm lens is a bit too much cash at the moment.

beats me if i say something stupid but why not 10-22? it has the 17 u need and is super wide

Because it won't work on a 5D as it's an EF-s lens.

Does it have to be a zoom? Lots of primes out there of various cost and quality. Generally a lot faster than the zooms as well. Which sounds like it would be handy to you.

Tamron SP 17mm 3.5 if you don't need/want a zoom or manual focus.

I'd recommend the Sigma 15-30mm will work FF and crop sensors. Had one for about 3-4 years and it has been a great performer. Couldn't afford the 17-40 at the time and haven't regretted going for the Simga been completely consistent throughout. Maybe selling mine as buying a Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM still trying to decide if I want to let it go though.

that's good to know... i was told that the 17-40mm wasn't up to much considering it's an L series... so i was always put off and thought i'd have to wait and go for the 16-35mm.

actually, i've just had a blinding idea!! i could have your 17-40mm and you could buy a new 16-35mm? you're only in stockport too... i don't mind picking it up :cuckoo:

Just to mention something about this - IS won't reallyhelp in this situation as subject movement will be much more of an issue than your camera shake.
