At a small get together tonight
I had my 580EX II on set to bounce of the ceiling with the white card up for this
I am well please at how it works, no hard shadow, I like it.
I know its not a great photo but its not meant to be.

Welcome to the world of not pointing your flash directly at the subject from on top your camera!

Nice. Just got around to getting myself a 430EXII yesterday to get around the self same problem.

Where was the flash Chaz? Since you haven't said otherwise, I am kind of assuming it was on-camera, head up for bounce and the bounce card out, ie lit from the top/front.

But the light is clearly coming mainly from behind/left  It's a nice effect though

flash in hotshoe, bounced of ceiling with card out camera on side flash to my left

could do with the tiniest amount of fill in on the left side of her face (her left that is, picture right)

but pretty darn good I'd say!

yes but it was a evening with friends and just had my flash on I think it did a good job

I don’t point a top flash at subject On my film camera I had a side mount what ever its called and bounced where ever I could BUT this was trying out the new 580EX II and its a great flash

Roger that. It is a great flash :D

I've just ordered one of these from our friend Kerso and cant wait to try it out. Gone hopefully are the days of pointing my flash straight at the subject! (as jontucker states!)

Kerso's price is about £280 for a 580EXII isn't it? Bargain

I think there's a good argument to get a good flash before you get an extra lens. It improves your flash photos no end, adding a new dimension to everyday pictures, and opens the door to a whole new world of strobist photography.
