Would you say that these were authentic carvings re date & do you think they look like they stand proud of the timber they are carved on?

wonder why the 2 8s are different, and the carving looks like its stuck on

but then again I also think may be their recessed, cut in :shrug:
 
They are recessed. They would also have been carved with a penknife in Larch which is a difficult wood to work.

They would not have been done by a carver but by the owners of the initials. They were found carved on a framing timber INSIDE an old wooden shelter on a hill. This shelter MAY have been originally thatched with heather & bracken. The floor was made with round stones from a nearby burn ( stream). The style of the lettering maybe suggests to me the date is authentic.

This is a pic of the shelter & from what I can gather it was used both as a shelter for deer stalkers & the ponies used to bring deer down from the hill.The carvings are on the horizontal framing in the open side. The hut has had new cladding on the left side & a small area at the bottom right of the door. There is evidence of the roof timbers being repaired at the back right & also heather & bracken on the roof. Oh & yes I know the sky is blown!:D

Also another neat carver. This fellow must have had time on his hands because I found several of his name carvings with different dates. Maybe he was a ponyman just hanging about waiting to go collect the deer?

The boards in the background were sawn on a circular saw & are of Norway spruce which accounts for the woodworm! Soft timber but lovely stuff to mill.
