Two Monitors - One Computer

Am I right in thinking that to be able to use two monitors correctly they must both be connected via the same means - ie both HDMI or both VGA?
I've only got one of each connection on my PC.

If they have to be connected via the same means is it OK to use a 'splitter'?

You can connect one via each no problem.

My computer uses one DVI and one VGA for each monitor.

That was quick!

I have tried connecting both but the second monitor (VGA connection) only shows the desktop wallpaper! Nothing on the desktop and no mouse cursor. Any advice very gratefully received :)

Move your cursor on the monitor you can see it on to both sides. You will find the second monitor is on one side. Which could be wrong for the physical placement of the monitors.

Go to display properties, from Right clicking on desktop > personalise > then Multiple displays > then you can drag the two monitors around to arrange how you have them arranged.

I am not sure the exact wording of the display or properties tabs as it depends on the version of windows you have.

Hopefully this makes sense.

The desktop is spread over both monitors, drag something to the left or right of your screen.

What is it you want it to show?

If you go into your graphics settings, you'll see the option to mirror your desktop or to span your desktop across both. There'll also be the option to switch primary monitor and to switch left to right.

I must confess to being thick! Because I had placed the second monitor to the left of the first, I was unable to drag stuff over and assumed it was a connection problem. However, Stephen said "You will find the second monitor is on one side. Which could be wrong for the physical placement of the monitors." This backed up by Pete and Phil. So dragging to the right made things appear on the left monitor. So thanks again to all of you :thumbs:

I'm using the second (small) monitor to look at tutorials for Lightroom whilst Lightroom is open on the other screen. Can recommend!

In Lightroom look in the tab window|secondary display, you can have the main window on the small monitor and the image on the main monitor full screen.

Thanks Pete. The picture quality of the second monitor is pretty poor so I'm not sure if I could use it like that. Will give it a go though.
