Two flash questions

Guys,
Just need some advice on two things...

1) How to meter correctly with the sun behind the subject and get the sun in focus as well as the subjects in front...

2) Shooting at night on a slow shutter (approx 2 secs) and the then firing the flash just before the exposure ends to highlight the subject....

for 2) - set your camera to 2nd curtain sync. (its in the menus)
 
1) use spot metering and stop the aperture down. also standing further away from the subject will increase your depth of field (although doing both of these things will require more power from the flash, depending on how bright the sun is on that day and how much light is getting on to the subjects face. it might be worth using a reflector too)

2) use second curtain sync on your flash.
 
Point the camera at the light source and it should give you a reflective meter reading. Lock the exposure or change to M and dial that same exposure into the camera. Put the flash in ETTL and fire a shot. The flash will light the subject.

You can adjust the exposure compensation if you need to get the exposure on the subject better.

As noted above depending on the brighness of the sun you may not have enough power to over power it so choices are then looking at a more powerful studio strobe or add a second light to the equation - two flashes (combines as one light source) give 2x the power - which only 1 stop of difference.

Regards getting both in focus, you will need to stop the camera down to a pretty small aperture which gives a large depth of field so you should be able to get both sharp ALWAYS focus on your subject though.

With a canon flash just read the manual. Set the flash to second sync and that's it. thye symbol is two arrows I think >>
