Twitter - who's on it?

Me neither or farcebook.

Not me either.

In general people seem to claim not to have much time to do anything these days yet thousands manage to find time to narrate the trivialities of their life on Twitter as if anyone else is interested.

Steve.

Awww miserable buggers the lot of 'em :p

I'll follow you George

Be warned though, Twitter gets very addictive! :D

Ahem, I accept that I am an old fart and I would rather poke my eyes out than waste my time with social networking websites :D

I'd never been on My Face or Space Book. I only joined Twitter to see what all the fuss was about... I can't get off it now lol  I've recently signed up to Facebook after lots of pressure from my kids but I don't enjoy it half as much as Twitter.

I would say that Facebook is a place to keep in touch with friends whereas Twitter is a place to make friends :)

No thanks - not anything like that.

im on it too.. dont do much twittering, more of a follower,

i only got 3 followers... well 1 really Edinburgh Gary, the other 2 are some photography magazine thing,

Thanks Grendel :)

to the rest of you - ANTISOCIAL ALERT!!!:razz:

Ahem, I am not antisocial, I've been on three photowalk meetings via this forum and made good friends with feek.
I'm also on msn messenger / live and my details for this are in my profile.
My good lady and my three stepdaughter all use farcebook and they perstered me for ages to join it so I did.
I rarely log onto it and I only have family on there.
Email, landline, mobile phone and messenger - how many more methods of comunication do I need for my friends to contact me?

..... thousands manage to find time to narrate the trivialities of their life on Twitter as if anyone else is interested.

People who don't use or don't understand Twitter often have this misconception that it's full of people saying "I'm doing up my shoe laces", "I'm going to the toilet" etc etc, but that is really not what it is all about at all. It's an incredibly social platform for making friends, keeping in touch with and chatting to people.

Depending who you follow, you can also keep up to date with what your favorite celbrites are up to, what is going on at venues, clubs, cinemas etc. For example I follow @drinksinreading who regularly update with which restaurants & bars in and around Reading are having offers & promotions.

An real example of how Twitter can work in everyday life:

A couple of weeks ago, before leaving work, I checked Twitter and saw someone who I follow (but had never met) tweeted that they were heading into Reading and was going to be stopping for a coffee at Starbucks. I replied to him that I was also going to be in town in about 30 mins so we arranged to meet up. One of his friends saw this exchange, and tweeted that he would join us, one of his friends then said he's do the same. By the time I got to Starbucks there were 5 of us there. We got on as if we'd known each other for years yet none of us had ever met, we spent ages chatting and still continue to talk regularly on Twitter.

It may not be everybody's cup of tea but for those who understand and embrace Twitter it is a very powerful social tool. :)

Twitter is the online equivalent of the biggest pub chat you could ever find. All your mates talking, and you listen to the ones you want to listen to, you reply to them, and have mini conversations. You ignore or filter out anything you dont want to talk about, and you talk about something you want to talk about.

Twitter....it's like the pub....but cheaper :D And no smelly alcy's trying to bum a pint of guinness off you

PS. I've had a personal reply off MC Hammer....the one and only..That's been framed :D Can't get better than that :p

Was on facebook but after old 'friends' including a couple of ex-g/f's and some other undesireables put in friend requests I just cancelled my account. Not even gonna chance flicker. Good though if it is your thing..

Perhaps, but my idea of socialising is actually going out and meeting people, not sitting in front of a computer screen virtually meeting people.

a certain irony in members of an online forum being negative about twitter ;)

There is that aspect of it too!

Steve.

I be following ya now.

I don't tweet much as my life isn't interesting enough :D

Forums are somewhat different.
Most are for people who are enthusiasts whether it be cars, photography, computers etc.
People tend to use them for advice and to learn.
Pretty much all forums have a place where people can talk about off topic subjects.
It’s not quite the same as following some washed up celeb is it?

I'm afraid Gary really has it spot on :)

There is absolutely no differrence between people discussing "off topic" subjects on an internet forum and people having conversations on Twitter. It's exactly the same thing, just done through a different interface. In fact, arguably, a lot of the conversations on Twitter are far more interesting ;)

And I'm sure the likes of Stephen Fry, Bill Bailey, Lily Allen, Richard Branson, to name but a few, would greatly appreciate being refered to as "washed up celebs" Again, it's not just about "following" these people, it's about interacting with them. I can't think of any other medium that would allow me to speak directly to one of these people or even engage in conversation with them

Perhaps I was a bit harsh.
I'm a big fan of Bill Bailey and I quite like Stephen Fry.
I shouldn't be so judgemental and just accept 'each to their own'.

There are also a lot of photographers on Twitter. I've only been using it for a few months so still finding interesting people to follow but the guy who runs Strobist is there and tweet some interesting stuffs: http://BANNED/strobist

I'm a Developer so follow key industry figures and get interesting news on it as well. Of course there are the random people who tweet obsessively but you don't have to follow them. Only follow interesting people and you'll only get interesting news :)

I don't tweet much but come out with something interesting now and again: http://BANNED/georgebridgeman

Other than Bill Bailey that seems a fair description.

So far as I can see twitter is mainly a marketing tool. Hands up all those who think that the big celebrities are really spending their time tweeting?

 @ Simmotino

who? It depends on the celebrity.

Philip Schofield (Who is a legend, and must not be dissed :bat: :p ) - Yes
Stephen Fry - Yes
Lily Allen - Yes
Cheryl Cole - Definitely Not
Chesney Hawkes :D - Yes
Gail Porter - Yes
Jason Manford - Yes

There are some who really use it to pimp stuff only, so much so I get a feel pretty quickly and unfollow them. There are some celebrities who don't reply to *anyone* (You can check if they do just by seeing a list of their tweets). I unfollow them too.

Not me either.

Steve.

Don't follow them then? Simples.

I'm on twitter, found some valuable contacts, decided to let a few other go because they were annoying... that's how it works.

I have it on the iPhone , haven't managed to work out what it does or how to use it. Seems a little pointless tbh. I get the odd message saying marcel has broken the forums again

Not my fault you keep unplugging them for your curling tongs

I'm happy with fb and MSN. CBA to faff around on twitter, and none of my friends are on there anyway. ;)
