Can anyone point me in the direction of a straightforward tutorial on turning day to night in Photoshop elements 8?

I have found a few through googling, but keep coming unstuck when trying to follow the instructions- either because I don't understand or it is written for something slightly different.

I also would like to know how to add snow if possible *ambitious* :D

Theres a free snowflake plug-in around somewhere, I remember trying it (not sure if it'll work in elements though) other wise you can do it with the noise filter and motion blur.
I'm not totally sure I understand what you mean about daylight to night, one way is to darken the image and add a little blue. But I'm wondering if you mean they way it's done in camera with flash? Person light in forground background dark??

Do a search or ask a question on wwwdpreview.com site in the forums>software/retouching part there has been some great work on day/night images.....if you cant find it by a search then someone will be able to point you to it.......they may have used Photoshop CS x in their conversion though

I agree with Dave that dpreview has some excellent examples on this. Peano is well revered on there as being the king of this process and I remember his tutorials I read many years ago. He has two, one for what he terms "Diffuse Light" and one for "Direct Light".

Brilliant thanks, that's just what I'm looking for. I will ask for help on there as I thnk half my problem is not knowing my way around Photoshop well enough.
I had tried a few different ones, but keep getting stumped as I can't follow what to do- the icons aren't there or the shortcut doesn't work or I just can't find the bit the tutorial is talking about. I am not sure if this is because it is written for a different version of Photoshop or just me being slow!

Well I don't have and have never used Elements 8 so what it can and can't do and the difference are, I don't know. :shake:
Ask away there but I'm sure the good folks here will know the answers to your questions too.

You should be able to do that with elements 8, I haven't got it but it's got a lot of the photoshop features, they are laid out differently and the menues are different (heaven knows why though) but it should still be "do-able"

Nice tuts by the way woodbutcher.

If only I could take credit for them  They do of course belong to Peano and any plaudits belong to him.
I will accept the praise heaped for remembering their existence and tracking them down though :geek:

Yes, I think that's the problem, or they are called something slightly different- for example I can't find 'extract', but I do have a 'magic extractor', which works a bit differently but seems to do pretty much the same thing

Everyone here is very helpful too I have a new question I'm aboutto post already! :D

Post away then and lets try to answer your concerns....the example I posted was also by Peano a Grand Master of Photoshop and a true expert

Sorry Dave, I didn't mean to dismiss your link, just make it a direct link to Peano's tutorials that I had read. It has been so long since I visited dpreview's retouching forum, I have no idea if Peano is still active. As such I don't know if another tutorial exists or an updated one. You are correct that he and a few others I used to admire are true experts indeed.

No problems matey, no offence taken at all (didn't mention it for that reason), yes, as far as I am aware Peano is still posting on the site.

Looks like I might have to take a trip back over there and see what wizardry he and his cohorts are doing nowadays. Especially since the advent of CS5 and its content aware technomancy.
