Got a 580EX MKI last week, want to know how to make the flash not flash.

I have a 430EX MKII off-camera, but want to turn the 580EX MKI off and just have the 430EX MKII flash.

I've tried alsorts, but if someone could explain step-by-step about how to do it, then let me know.

Many Thanks
Jamie

anyone know how to do it to a 430 ex? so I can use it for purely AF assist I tend to just set it manual 1/64th and hope it doesn't interfere too much....

I don't think you can do it on a 430. The 580 has this facility so that it can be operated as a wireless trigger.

To turn the flash OFF on the 580 you need to set it up to be the "Master". Hold the ZOOM button for 2-3 seconds. You'll see "MASTER" Flash along with the ON message. Press the "Set" button in the center of the control wheel to select this.

Now press the Zoom button again, and you should see the A:B ration message flash. Select ON. Now press the ZOOM button again and continue to do this to cycle through the options. You'll come to a point where you see the Flash Output icon flash and the message "on" appear. Turn the control wheel so that the message says "off" and press the set button.

When you've finished don't forget to turn the flash back on. I spent 10 mins wondering why my flash wasn't firing. I'd turned it off a few days ago and had forgotten to turn it on again.

Thanks for the help, I have a 580 MKI, so it has it's own master/slave trigger at the bottom.

I tried the above (Chappers) but it still doesn't want to work :(

I really should read the small print on the manual :P

Even if I turn off the flash it will still fire a pre-flash to activate the 430EX

set it to 1/64th and turn it round or point it up:shrug:

The flash still fires when you turn it off ... but not when the shutter is open.
The pre flash has to fire to control the other flashes.

AS to the 430EX there is not a lot you can do except cover the flash head, but leave the red assist beam clear.

Just been testing it out now.

And I can't tell any difference between having the flash on or off. I know it has to trigger the 430EX MKII, but I still think it's flash is in the pitcure.

I have taken the same picture with;
The 580 + 430 both on
The 580 off and 430 on
The 580 on, and the 430 hidden out the way, covered up

And all the photos look the same :s

Its weird

Try taking the shot
1st with the 580ex off facing the subject and the 430 ex at 90 degrees to the side.
same again with the with the flash on.

2nd with the 580 ex 0ff but pointing to the side with the 430 in the same position as before.
same again with the 580EX on
use an open white book or folder ,with the spine facing you as a target.
you will be able to see where the light is coming from.
