Trying to understand Flickr 'explore'

Im trying to understand how explore works on flickr? Is it purely just when a picture reaches a certain amount of views or are they chosen or what. I often find myself looking through the explore page and thinking to myself 'what an awful picture how did that manage to get on explore'! Don't get me wrong 9/10 times they are fantastic and i obviously appreciate that people have different opinions but some of them i think 'come on'.

From memory it's some kind of computer algorithm that selects them.

A few of mine that we're explored were fairly mundane.

theres no rhyme or reason to it ,iv'e had just under 300 explored and i sometimes wonder myself ,a couple of yrs ago i spotted a washed up plastic spade on the beach ,stuck it in the sand took a pic for a laugh and yep it made explore ,go figure .

another one of mine that made it was a short video of a dancing xmas tree toy .the mind boggles

Strangest thing about that one is the tiny amount of views it received for an "explored" photo!
