Trying to take a picture of my house...

Hi All

I am trying to take a picture of my house from the back garden as there are some nice clouds with blue sky.

Also doing this so i can practice.

Maybe try a HDR shot after but the issue i am having is all i get is a white shot but if i put it on Auto a picture comes but looks weak.

I assume i need to do long exposure for this right, 30 seconds, iso 100 and high F number

I really have no idea.. Please help
 
You won't get 30 seconds exposure in daylight without a strong nd filter. You pictures are white because they are overexposed.

Take two shots, one exposed for the clouds and one for the house and merge them in software.

Whats the best way of taking both shots ? Settings wise
 
Set the camera to Av mode and set to f8.0 (at least as a starting point), take a picture of the sky and see what the settings.

Dial these settings into Manual mode and take a picture of the house, the sky should come out exposed correctly.

Switch back to Av and take a picture of the house then combine the two photos in photoshop or an HDR program.

Alternatively, use the auto-bracketing facility if you camera has it. Set the exposure to -2, 0, +2 and fire off 3 shots.

Note that you may want to use a tripod to make sure you get identical shots.

I will try the AV mode once i get back home.

The suggesting of Av was only as it's a semi-manual mode so you can hopefully get the right depth of field.

Assuming your camera works the same as my 500D, try using the camera's self timer, it will count down then take all 3 shots saving you from pressing the button 3 times.
Or if trying it handheld, I use the continuous shooting mode. Press and hold the button and it'll fire off all 3 shots.
