Hi all,
This might sound like a really stupid 'blond' question (because I am blond I can say that ;)) but..

Can you try out lenses in jessops? I'm thinking of getting a 35mm prime for my d3000 but I want to have a look and a play before I buy. If I take my d3000 with me will they let me ?

I know this is going to sound really daft to most of you lot here, but it can be difficult to get out to town at the mo, so don't want to go all that way for a wasted trip as the sales person looks at me like I'm a monkey with a camera (with blond hair lol).

Thanks for letting me ask my stupid question :D

Yes is the short answer in my experience but I guess that assumes that they have the lens in stock and possibly more than one so that they can show you a display model.

Just give them a ring before you go. Job done.

I have always found a quick play in a shop a bit too brief for making buying decisions.

It may be worth your while to hire the lens you are thinking about. Lens for Hire are very good and provide a full 7 days hire, more than enough for a thorough test drive.

OK, you spend a bit of cash on the hire. But on the plus side if you don't like the lens you have not spent a large amount and need to shift a lens.

I went into Jessops yesterday to look for a large bag, but while browsing I looked at the Canon display and was very disappointed. They had an 1100D, 550D an a 600D as bodies, and an 18-55 IS, 55-250 IS, 50 1.8, 50 1.4 and a Tamron 70-300. That was it, no 7D or 5D2 (which I've got), no xxD series and no 1D series nor any info about the 1Dx. There wasn't any L lenses, macro lenses or anything physically large. If I'd gone into the shop to actually buy a camera kit, unless I was relatively new to DSLR's they had nothing of interest.

I then went to L.C.E. the other end of town and they had a great range of bodies, lenses both Canon and 3rd party and flashguns all on display. I asked them about a very large bag and both assistants looked and advised me on the range available, even when it became obvious they hadn't got anything suitable in stock, and wasn't going to make a sale at that point. They were very helpful, full of advice and were very knowledgeable.

I have to say, I wont be going back into Jessops in the forseeable future, but I will be going back to L.C.E. if I have any questions or if I need to buy anything they have in stock.

Hi,

Usually Jessops will let you play (as has been commented above).

To see whether the field of view is ok, use your kit lens set to the mm you want.. ie 35.

Only difference should be a crisper image and a lower minimum f# (more bokeh/blur).

I have recently bought the 35mm f1.8 (approx 180 in jessops in store - around 170 on their web site) and they did a 6 month interest free option too.
Pictures should be on the links in the sig.

Try them and the lens out!
