Heyy everyone,

I was just wondering if any of you kind people could help me, and I am sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I have been using my flashgun with my radio triggers off camera for the first time today, and managed to get this;

I was just wondering if I was doing it properly, right settings, exposure etc...

Also i don't really like the grey bit at the top and wondered why that was there?

Thanks everyone,

Matt!

It will say the flash didn't fire if you use radio triggers so that isn't an issue - the flash clearly fired

Certainly a colour balance issue. Set it to flash colour balance (the wee lightning bolt)

Also did you have something over the flash head or in front of it? Or did you have a lens hood on?

Properly, right settings and exposure, only you can answer. Overall, does it look like you wanted it to? If so, then yes, you're doing it 'properly'.

The dark area at the top is fall off from the flash. ie, the light hit the chap in the chair, but not the wall above. If you set the flash to a wider zoom, use a diffuser of some kind, or place the flash further away from your subject, it will cover a wider area of your shot.

Didn't thinkl of the flash having been zoomed :) Yes the fall off could cause that.

which flash?
for example the canon ones have a built in diffuser which, when deployed, zooms the flash all the way out which can help minimise this
or did you try bouncing the flash?

I'll sort out white balance and try again today! I shot through an umbrella the flash wasnt zoomed in as far as I can remember! The flash I'm using is a cheap old jessops one of that helps :) thanks for all of your replys, what can I do differently next time?

There is no light in his eyes - the flash is located too far camera right.

Also make sure the flash is able to fill the brolly with light. I wonder if the vignette is down to the flash being pushed too far inside the brolly?

Jim

The brolly is only small, when I try again today I'll put it further away from flash and closer to subject?

Just make sure nothing is blocking the light from the gun and that the light fills it to close to the edges - you don't want the flash spliiong outside of that either.

Yes close to the subject the better and softer light you will get.

It may be a mistake but I like it. It has an air of melancholy.

Is the dark patch on the wall a shutter curtain shadow due to sync speed?? Not looked at EXIF so not sure what shutter speed was used.

No, the edge would be harder and straighter, and the shadow would run along the long edge of the frame. (And this was shot at 1/125th so shouldn't be any worries there).

Thanks for all your replies, I have reshot and edited, much better now :) I'll post when I'm back home!
