Tripod

I've been really impressed with the one that was recommended in a recent thread off Ebay (see here). The head's not amazing, but the tripod itself is superb and you could easily nip out and spend the extra £50 on a decent head.
I think he sells the tripod as a "legs only" kit without the head, which gives even more scope to have a decent mount for your camera.

I think i might be going for the tripod legs on that ebay shop, and then get a manfrotto 390rc2. Using my jessops tripod makes me so stressed, i constantly have to hold the strap of the camera just incase it falls off again, and i can't lift or carry the tripod with the camera on it. Plus it dances in a light breeze, and the head is never perfectly horizontal or vertical meaning every photo has to be adjusted in post processing. :p

Just a word of caution on that pod in the ebay link. I note the full extended height is only 62.5 inches- 5ft 21/2 inches. Presumably that includes the centre column fully raised. You should always avoid raising the column if possible anyway as it's the least rigid way to use a pod. Taller peeps might find it a bit short and there's nothing worse than standing behind a pod with a continual stoop for any length of time. It looks good quality and good value as well as being compact when folded, but there might be a price to pay in the max height. ;)

Im pretty tall (6"2 maybe 6"3) and my current tripod is just under 5feet when fully extended (center column at max height). I can't use the extended column unless indoors because its too unstable. Although i find the height pretty awkward at times, i seem to manage ok as i use the remote shutter release, so im only bent down when composing the shot. What legs would you recommend for a similar price then CT? Theres so many manfrotto models i get lost trying to find the right one, do they do something similar at the same price? I need to be able to trust my tripod :p

EDIT: Sorry for hogging the thread btw! I guess im asking questions that will help the OP anyway :p

The Manfrotto 190 series is a popular choice Alex and is pro quality so you wont outgrow it. Make sure you get the right legs whatever you do - you can always add a decent head as and when you have the necessary dosh to spend.

Lots of peeps here have the 190 and I'm sure they'll wise you up on it's max height, although you should be able to find the full specs on Warehouse Express. :)

Check out the Manfrotto 055 tripods too Alex - equally good quality and less dosh - I think.

055 is the way to go. but that is just the legs iirc, as above, you can add a good head at a later date

The 055 looks fantastic, but at about £120 just for the legs, its out of my budget. The 190 also looks good, apart from the size, too small :(

Regardless of size issues, does the ebay one look decent quality? It looks fairly robust, very similar to some manfrotto tripods.

Can't find any info on the pod Alexis but I found this discussion on that ball head that comes with it.

CLICKY

The ball head seems to be of Chinese origin so it's a fair bet that the tripod is too. To be honest it looks like a Manfrotto copy at a ridiculous price, so I really wouldn't expect too much from it. ;)

Don't do is my advice mate.

Hi mate, I bought the 055 prob excellent tripod....couldn't get over the difference having a good tripod makes (which I thought my old one was) bought from Camera King £112.90 inc. Vat and P&P (legs only).
Worth saving a couple of extra weeks.
Ken.

I think Matty has one of these and he's been happy with it.

I have the 190 as it offered the best mix of stability and portability, as a side effect it's not quite as tall as the heavier 055 and a little less solid at full extension. But I'd rather put up with that than have a tripod I would choose to leave behind rather than lug the weight around.

The 390rc2 head is a good entry level head......there's one in the classifieds :D

Yeh, it was Matty that recommended it to me. I'm pleased with mine.

How long have you had it, and hows it holding up? Any signs of lose legs or flexible parts that shouldn't flex? :p

I've only had it a few weeks, not really had it "out in the field" but it's good and solid, if a little on the heavy side. If you want some pics, let me know.

Some photos would be excellent, cheers mate

I'm no expert but the Manfrotto 190XPROB Clickme looks like the bees knees, and it's £99 for the stand at Jessops right now.

LMAO, the video advertisement for that tripod is hilarious. More sexual innuendoes than a conversation with graham norton.

Maybe that's why I like the look of it so much :naughty:

I'll throw my hat in for the 055PRO, I didn't know what stability was until I invested in that tripod. It is pretty heavy but for me that was a price worth pay as generally speaking the less weight it has, the less stable it is. I really like that you can mount the centre column horizontally, very handy for macro work.

I have the 804RC2 head that I can also heartily recommend although that would be rather over your budget. As others have suggested investing in decent legs now and a better head down the line would be a wise way to go.

You can't go wrong with Manfrotto...and I've got Manfrotto 190BPro with Manfrotto MN804RC2 head...beautiful!!

With tripod it's best to invest in the best you can afford so that it'll last longer than you would have want it to do so!

the smick trading one is still going strong, not had any issues with it at all. I bought a velbon sherpa head for it, and i cant compain at all
