Tripod Thread (as in screw hole, not topic/thread)

Hi again all

So, having bought my Panasonic TZ18, I have a simple question. Are all threads for tripods the same ? I know it might sound like a bit of a daft question, but I am going to buy a cheap tripod off of ebay just to experiment a bit, but do not want to get something that knackers the tripod thread on the camera !

I am looking at this just now. Very cheap I know, but I'm just experimenting here :)

The standard thread is 1/4 inch x 20 threads per inch Whitworth AFAIK, and every camera I've owned has used this. I think there are some with a 3/8 x 16 tpi fitting too, but they're usually found on larger cameras and for attaching some tripod heads. You should be fine, but do as Dave suggests and ask the seller to confirm that it will fit the TZ18 if you want to be sure.

Just had another thought. Don't worry about damaging the thread in the camera if you decide to take a chance. The tripod screw will either fit easily, and correctly, or it won't. Just don't force it!

I suppose, not like it's a fortune, might just buy it and give it a go, being sure not to be too hamfisted with it ! I would ask the ebay seller the question, but in mu experience, the sellers on ebay who sell large volumes of cheap stuff know very little about the product. Comes with buying cheap I spose !

On a side note, one thing that is really annoying me ATM is I can't figure out how to change the aspect ratio (to 16:9 for example) when taking pictures. I did find a section on the aspect ratio in the instruction booklet, but no actual instruction or detail about how to change it within the menu. Grrrrrr !!! :bang: May have to post a camera specific question I think.

I don't have the TZ18, but I assume the menus are the same as the TZ9. Select any mode other than Ai. Press the central button on the rear controller. This should open the Record menu (Orange tab with camera icon). Scroll down to Aspect Ratio, and press the right button on the controller. Scroll down to 16:9 and press the central button again to choose it. Hope this works for you.

I'm sure there probably is other sizes for tripods but the only one I've ever seen is the standard 1/4" by 20 threads. I've got 2 large tripods and 1 tiny desktop one and they all use the same size. I can barely hold up 1 of my flashguns with the mini one but it does sometimes come in handy.
