Tripod / Monopod Motorsport

…always told to leave OS off when on a tripod?

Right!
When on a tripod, on stable ground (not on a boat
or rough road) VR or OS, these do not have to be
included in the equation.

I, personally,
never us this feature.

It could be you are pushing the shutter release button too hard and inducing some movement, even though the body and lens are mounted on a tripod, and the image stabilisation helps reduce this.

I never use a tripod for motorsports as I found it too restrictive, but use a monopod with my 400 2.8 as it's a bit on the heavy side for hand holding.

Hi all,

On a day like today where it's overcast is it ok to use image stabilization when on a tripod for head on shots.

Without it when I'm pressing the shutter it's really shakey but with it obviously makes a huge difference - but we're always told to leave OS off when on a tripod?

Don't use IS when mounted on a tripod - this can cause issues.

It is recommended (on all my lenses that have IS) to switch this off when mounting on tripod.

Some lenses do auto detect being mounted so are inactive even if you've switched it on.

If you're getting shaken / blurred results on a tripod / monopod it could be user instigated - as mentioned above pressing the shutter button too hard or could be your actual settings that need adjustments- e.g. shutter speed.

Post an image up in this thread with the settings used - shutter speed, aperture etc etc might help with some diagnosis / help...

The answer is "maybe"... some versions of stabilization have tripod mode, some have tripod recognition and will switch automatically. If camera shake is adversely affecting your images then there is no reason to not give it a try.

I use OS when I have my camera on my monopod, but not when on my tripod, unless I forget to turn it off. Doesn't seem to have an adverse effect when I forget :)

Shouldn't really need IS for sport anyway, even for panning.
