I'm looking for a tripod for my 40D (and my current biggest lens is only a Tamron 17-50mm).

I'm 6'3'', am looking for something sturdy but fairly light (if possible) and very portable.

Budget is... well... £50-£100, but preferably towards the £50.

I don't even know if that's possible?

Also, a question: is it possible to use a tripod without a ball head? Obviously it would limit mobility, but could I buy a tripod and then add a ball head at a later date (funds permitting!)

I've looked at the Redsnapper one, and it's a pretty good price for what looks like a great product, but it's perhaps a little short and also towards the top of the cash limit for me.

Any help welcome!

Hiya mate.
There's lots of people here who recommend the redsnappers.
I've just got me a deal at Jessops on this Manfrotto.

Link to Jessies tripod

Sturdy as hell, will be plenty tall enough for you.
Quite heavy, but not excessively.
Only a basic head, but plenty good enough for everyday use.

And unfortunately, you cannot use a tripod without a head (just checked!)

Do yourself a favor mate, DON'T BUY A CHEAP ONE!
I thought a cheapy would be fine but trust me, it WON'T!!!!
The money I wasted on cheapo's could've been put towards a decent one.
You will realise (hopefully not when it's too late!) that cheap tripods just don't work.

For £100 you certainly can get a decent one.
Either from redsnapper, or the Manfrotto from Jessops, which with the £5 discount code worked out to £94.99

i have a manfortto, but cant stress how important it is to get a good one whatever brand you chose.

Bought a Benbo Trekker II with a standard & ball head & bag from Ebay for £48 including P&P.

Thanks for the advice so far.

Erg: and are you happy with it? That's the kind of price I like... but as pointed out, I don't want to need another one in three months...

Manfotto for me too. Bought a second hand one and I've had it for 10 years the only thing that's gone wrong with it was the little bit of cork on the top that stops your camera getting marked. (055 with a 141 pan and tilt head).

Get a good'un i got a cheapo off ebay for 14.99 + 499 p&p adn well that only last a couple months maybe longer if i didn't drop it. I will get a decent one when i get a new camera!

Thought about a Redsnapper at all? You can get the legs + ball head (both very high quality) for £90 delivered (10% discount for TP members). Going to be ordering one myself as soon as the ball heads are back in stock :)

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Slik 300DX ?
I have an old Slik 88 from my film days which has done me proud for more years than I want to recall. I think it cost about £40, even then it was a good tripod for the money.
Naturally, I would like to continue with Slik if feasible.

Never used one but they're apparently very good tripods, especially for their price. Only caveat is that they're pretty big and heavy, weighing in at 3.2Kg, and probably not that suitable for lugging around in the outdoors.

When will they be back in stock?
How do they compare to other brands?

I have recently got myself a Red Snapper with ball head.. excellent piece of kit, feels really solid, even at full height. Very quick delivery for Joe at Red Snapper
