Tripod head question

Yes
hi

I have a Sony a7 and find that the grip is just not deep enough to get all my fingers comfortable around it. The little finger goes underneath the camera.

I don't want to get a big grip so have ordered a neweer lb-a7 l plate which will give me a extra half inch or so underneath the camera.

My question is......will the l plate fit on my normal tripod quick release plate.

If not, what do I need to buy as I don't want to take the l plate off everytime I want to mount it on my tripod.

I thank you.

The Neweer plate has an ARCA/Swiss connector on the base and on the 'L' up the left-hand end. If your tripod is ARCA/Swiss compatible then you're laughing. If you have a Manfrotto tripod then you'll need to buy an ARCA/Swiss clamp to convert your current quick release. There might might be a better solution but I haven't looked into it. As I'm not a mind-reader I don't know which you have.

My tripod is a Giottos mh5011n

I'll need a clamp?

Just the lightweight 3 way head that originally was in the tripod.
If it's the one in the link below than its not an arca Swiss connection plate.

You well need to get an arca Swiss connector that screws onto your existing heads plate. Something like the clamp below (not sure if this is a good one or not.

Yes. That's the one.

Or I could get a whole new head? Or tripod?

What's the best route?
I've edited my earlier response. You can get a new head that is Arca Swiss compatible but the clamp would be the cheapest option especially as you purchased a L bracket for use as a grip rather than the usual landscape to portrait change. L brackets are normally about 6-8mm (1/4 to 1/3 inch) deep so you may not asmuch extra depth as you want.

Thanks.

Would this do the trick?

Sorry to be thick.

Does the arca Swiss clamp go onto the Giottos qr plate? Or how does it work??

To save messing about if have just ordered a new tripod.

But if I have the l bracket I don't need a qr plate?
You won't need a QR plate attached to the camera but your existing tripod is not compatible with the L bracket so you need an 'adapter' to connect the two together. The giottos QR plate attaches to the arca Swiss clamp so that you can use the L bracket on your existing head. It's not pretty but it's the easiest way to change and use your existing tripod/head.

As long as the head is an arca Swiss type clamp it will work with the L bracket. Not sure if you have ordered it already but it may be worth waiting for the L bracket to see if it does what you want it to before buying a new tripod and head.
