Hi,

I'm looking to get a reasonably priced tripod and mount, mainly for motorsport and airshow type events. It needs to be lightweight to lug around. I don't know whether a pan/tilt head proper or a ball head is a good idea? The camera would be a DSLR with a say a 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens.

I have a Manfroto 074 and Gitzo head from years ago that I've never realy used - it was gifted to me - it's too heavy and too cumbersome. You could mount a TV camera on it!

thanks in advance,

Brian.

Hi, the Manfrotto 190 XproB seem to be the legs of choice these days (about £85 now) and i reckon a ball head would be your best bet for panning shots to keep full control of your camera (manfrotto 488RC2, or even 486RC2 which i have).

Cost is an important factor here.......:D

Lightweight is always expensive.

For airshow work I'd expect a ball head to be a quicker and easier option.

I use a manfrotto 190 with a 322 grip head, it's light enough to lug about, but not the sturdiest in a breeze or fully extended.

Thanks for the feedback - I'll have a look at those recommended. I'm only just getting back into serious photography, I had a few years 'holiday' where I used a digital compact mainly for holidays and the like but haven't done any serious picture taking for a long while. TBH I was looking to experiment really, I have always shot these sort of things hand held, sometimes with variable results, maybe that's more a question of technique than anything else!

Brian.
