Hi,

My Dad and I are going to New York City in April and I was wondering what lenses are good to use there etc.

I have a Canon 400D with an 18-55mm kit lens and he has a Canon 500D with the kit lens IS and the 55-250mm IS Canon lens. Is this sufficient to take good photo's there of the architecture, people, skyline shots etc. ?

Also, does anyone know of a decent small sized bag to take just my 400D and the kit lens?

Alex

They both look good. I think I'll hire one.

At least now I'll be able to fit the whole Empire State Building into the frame!

+1 for the Canon 10-22, I've hired that from lensesforhire.co.uk about 3 times now, it's a corker of a lens!

Sharper than my wit when I'm on top form

Thanks for your recommendation too! I think I'll hire that one for sure!

Also, can anyone recommend a lightweight tripod, that's cheapish, and good for skyline shots etc.

Alex

10-50 range would be great!

I manily used 10-20 sigma, everthing is tall and wide, can not wait to go back!!

My wife and I are making our first visit to New York in a few weeks time. We wish to make the best of the photographic opportunities, but don’t wish to encumber ourselves with everything we have accumulated over the last year or two.
Our kit comprises;
Bodies:
My Canon 40D, Wife’s Canon 550D
Shared lenses:
Sigma 10-20, Sigma 17-35, Canon nifty 50 f1.8, Canon 85 F1.8, Canon 70-200 F4 L, 2 x extender mk2.
Which should we leave behind?
Or should I ditch the 40D for the trip and get myself a Powershot G12?

I took my 50D and kit lens 17-85 and it was fine gave flexibility, you could always buy a new lens out there

Definitely a good lens to take, but wouldn't 3 x rentals >= the cost of the lens? I'd just buy one. If it becomes unnecessary, they command good prices 2nd hand.

They've been short rentals, so total about £150 so far :p Sorely tempted to buy now though, good old tax refunds. So far I've bought a longboard and a new suit...
