Hi all, I plan on taking some larger lenses (nikon 600mm, nikon 300mm and sigma 150-600 s) back to Oz from the UK. Most of my gear is packed into 2 (Vanguard) cases that are lockable and very well padded. The larger lenses i can't really seem to find a good strong case/cases for that don't break the budget .. What are people using out there, where did you get it and of course what prices are involved?

Pelican case, don’t accept anything else and don’t skim on it.

It’s a couple of hundred to protect thousands of pounds of gear. Worth the investment.

Is carry on possible? I get canon 600 f4 II and 300 f2.8 II and camera bodies inside a flipside 500 aw.

I wouldn't take them with me, I'd have them shipped. @StewartR, any suggestions?

Dunno. We ship big lenses like 600mm in custom-made flight cases like this. (These aren't my photos, but they are from our case builder's gallery so they're the same cases.) But they cost about £400-£500 each, so not necessarily a good idea for a one-off transit.

For smaller lenses like a 300mm f/2.8 or a 150-600mm we'd use a Peli-type case. But not actual Peli cases themselves, because their dimensions aren't very convenient. We use Explorer cases, and for both the 300/2.8 and the 150-600 we find that the Explorer 3818 is a pretty good fit.

I can't really offer any advice with regard to sending unaccompanied items outside the EU. We don't do it, for the simple reason that if something gets stuck in customs it could be inconvenient in the extreme. Cases like this are fine for shipping around generally though.

thanks for all the replies. I opted to buy some used Pelican 1660 cases from a guy who was selling two on fleabay .. arrived yesterday in fantastic condition .. saved in the region of £700 on both the cases and the foam .. so all is sorted and I can store all my large lenses and small tripods in the 2 cases .. bonus :-)
