Any advice on a good travel tripod, would like the smallest one I can get when it's folded down but that will still be quite sturdy when it's fully extended...any suggestions?!

What camera/lenses do you have? knowing what type of weight the tripod will have to support will help in providing options.

If you use remote release, then it doesn't have to be sturdy (apart from windy places maybe). Some cheap velbon tripods might do (some Jesspos ones do have really nasty heads, useless even for compacts).

If you do need sturdy one then Manfrotto 190XPRO B monster is about as small as it gets. Carbon fibre ones are lighter, but far more expensive and not as stable.

Sorry to veer off topic slightly but can anyone tell me whether airlines have the facility to check a tripod at the gate - in the same way, say, as you can for a pushchair? I prefer to only take carry-on but I'm guessing they won't let me take this into the cabin with new security??

I genuinely don't know about checking it at the gate, as I always put mine in my suitcase. However, I bought my tripod (Manfrotto 190 XPROB) with that in mind, so I made sure it would fit - I wouldn't know if larger tripods fit though?

re: tripods in the cabin, if it's deemed a security issue (which I'm not sure if it is, I can ask tomorrow when I next fly out of Manchester), you won't get it it past the security check point, must admit I'd rather put it into a suitcase, as it's journey from the boarding gate to the aircraft hold could still be rough (apologies to any baggage handlers who may be members of TP). :)

I have a feisol traveller (3441). I always put it in my hold luggage.

They seem to have increased in price since I purchased mine, dodgy pound I guess, it arrived from Taiwan in 3 days.

There's a guy on here selling camera bean bags. Buy one.

I travelled to Australia with my carbon fibre gitzo-a-like and Markins M20 tripod, didn't touch the damn thing the whole trip because I nailed everything with the bag instead. Weighs nothing, won't cause trouble at customs and you won't feel gutted if you leave it in a desert someplace as they're not expensive either.

Highly recommended.

As a note: I dislike Manfrotto 190's and 055's due to vibration transmission through the legs. Sold mine to get the carbon fiber benro 2xxx. Bought the smaller series thinking it'd be good for travel, wished I'd got the 3xxx series. Light + Stable just doesn't work with tripods. Listen to people like Thom Hogan who have been there and done it all.

I took a Velbon CX Mini on holiday with me, folded up it fits in my back pack and its sturdy enough to take my 50D with no problems. Cost £20.

Benro Travel Angel is a Gitzo copy at half the price. Very nice quality too. Loads of options here http://cgi.ebay.com/New-BENRO-C-068...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ca950c056

Looks good, but given I've already got the Gitzo I'm not about to change.

I've taken my GT1541T on many flights without issue. I strap it to the outside of a LowePro Vertex 100AW. When I used to take a Manfrotto 055xprob abroad I'd put it diagonally inside a suitcase for hold baggage.

Thanks Kevin. I have a Velbon. It's not particularly heavy but I'm worried they might see it as an issue. I would be very grateful for further info but I also take onboard (no pun intended!) your comments about baggage handling.

Thanks all really helpful, I have a 1000d and a 75-300mm lens is the biggest one I'll be bringing away with me. Velbon mini looks good and well within price range so might check it out.
I do a lot of short haul flights and you definitely will need to fit your tripod in whatever bag you're carrying, Ryanair in particular won't even let you have duty free shopping that won't fit into your carry on luggage.
