Hi, i have been trying to get travel insurance which will cover some basic photography equipment for a few weeks when i head to Cyprus. All the companies cover around £2000 for items but a single item is only coered to £250. Im taking the D300 which in its self wouldnt be covered due to the cost. Anyone know places for me to try for holiday insurance.

The guys i use cover european and worldwide to the same level as for UK, once i remember the name :suspect:  i'll let you know

Going to Salou for a week on Saturday, taking all kit. Did not even think about insurance ! Now watching theis thread eagerly !

My house insurance covers everything provided I'm not out of the country for more than 60 days.

Check your home contents insurance decent policies cover you for holidays!

I've got seperate insurance for my gear with photoguard. Cover is EU wide with 30 days worldwide a year, very reasonable price as well.

I had to pay extra on my house insurance as they had a single item limit of £500. I made sure all my kit was covered fully, but it also includes holidays abroad.

Insurance you really have to read the small print and ask them questions. For example proof of ownership, getting receipts, especially for secondhand items and also checking carefully about where the camera is stored...e.g. it may have to be in a room safe which can be very small and physically impossible. You also need to be sure they don't limit your equipment to a 'all the items being subject to a limit', i.e. all the gear is subject to a £1000 limit. Photoguard I believe have some strict terms and require you to specify and receipt all items.

On a seperate note, how can people take a collection of stuff on holiday?? I travel on planes regularly and they rarely weigh hand luggage. However, if I go on a package holiday to with Thomson or a tavel company they are very strict on weight. Hand luggage is often very limited to 5kg which is barely a camera and decent lens when you add the weight of a decent bag and an ipod??

I'd say either go through your home insurance small print and make sure they cover you, specify each item on your policy or get a seperate policy for your equipment.
Personally, I'd get a seperate policy. Mine covers me anywhere in the world and if it's left in a car/hotel room etc, yes it wasn't the cheapest insurance policy in the world but it's piece of mind and (hopefully) a whole heap less hassle should the worst happen.

I've never had a piece of hand luggage weighed on any airline even those of the disgustingly low budget variety like My Travel.

indeed..

Evidence of ownership - to pay out for an insurance claim, we need to be certain that you were/are the owner of the insured items. Evidence can be shown by, for example, an original receipt clearly showing the item and date of purchase. Alternative evidence can include a bank or credit card statement, photographs, a copy receipt from the retailer, packaging or literature.
