Last year S**a the over 50's insurance broker, charged me £114.00 for annual European Travel Insurance

This year they want £230.00 for seven days in Iceland and £600.00 for ten days in Spain the only difference is I now have cancer
Mention the "C" word and they stick a couple of zero's on the end, it's not as if I would book the holiday if was ill.

Some companies won't even give me a quote
Talk about kicking you when you are down.

Sorry to hear of your illness, it's horrible when you have added stress like this, I guess they would say it's all about risk and your illness makes you a greater risk of needing the insurance ... not what you need to hear at a time like this :(

I would look at the specific terms of the health agreements that your destination country has with the UK. I know the EHIC has many caveats and won't cover your baggage etc, but at those prices, baggage cover becomes secondary I'd imagine.

There is a lot of information on reciprocal health agreements online. Studying the agreements themselves, may help avoid the need for travel insurance at all. For example, baggage can be carried by your traveling companion, thus under their policy, whilst still remaining within the law. I feel for you, whilst having cancer is obviously a serious health condition, it does not mean you are highly likely to need ridiculously expensive healthcare instantly in the majority of situations, especially when you're a 2 hour flight from home.

The main place to avoid would definitely be the USA, for obvious reasons, but I'd imagine with an EHIC, some knowledge of the agreements and a copy of your UK medical records, you might be ok without travel insurance in Europe unless you need it for another reason.

The small print is the key. I've done it myself for a relative.

Good luck.

It's worth looking at specialist travel insurers when you have medical conditions, rather than the likes of the company you mentioned. There are a number that will provide sensible quotes as they understand the medical risks. In saying that, it will depend on the type of cancer.

Agree with this. Not a recommendation but here's one

Phoned and got a quote for Annual Trip Comprehensive: £41.97

This will not cover any pre-existing medical conditions, but my family have been told if I die overseas because of my pre-exsisting just to fly over have me cremated and bring the ashes home.

I now just need to talk someone into coming on holiday with me.
