Hi everyone. I'm very lucky to be going to the Falklands, S. Georgia & Antartica in late 2022, and i was hoping for some advice on what would be your chosen option (given weight restrictions, i'm not keen to take a heavy laptop) to back up my memory cards to ( I intend on having sufficient cards to avoid having to reuse any during the 3 week cruise).

I'd take a lightish laptop: 13" ultrabook type + a card reader if it didn't have one built in + 1TB SSD external drive if the internal drive was too small.. IIRC there are some options available that will back up your cards direct to some form of drive without needing a computer.

I would also suggest taking a small laptop, as I would want 3 copies of my images ASAP. For me that would be:
  1. SD cards
  2. Laptop
  3. External HDD/SSD - I like the SanDisk SSDs, as they are small enough to keep on you at all times, so even if laptop/camera bag get lost you still have your images.

Also, a laptop would allow some curation of images - there will be parts of the cruise that will be enlivened by catalogue sorting..

It's worth finding a camera bag with a laptop slot to reduce the number of items you're carrying on the flights then choosing your laptop to fit the slot. Or choosing your camera bag to fit the laptop, of course. I generally travel with a Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 30 and a Microsoft Surface Go 2 fits nicely in its tablet slot.

Thanks to all of you for your responses.....i think i need to reconsider the reluctance to take a laptop, and maybe search for a new, lightweight one. I will also have a look at the sandisk SSD options thanks Lewis.

Use your phone, to transfer from card to another card or drive.

I use an old 256Gb SSD drive with a USB adapter and plug it straight into my phone.
