hi
I'm away to the New Forest tomorrow and have 2 options in my sat nav. I'm starting from Boston Lincs and one way is A1 London, M25, M3 or Northampton, Oxford. Newbury. I'm not in a rush but like an easy drive.

Basically do I avoid the M25. We are leaving home at 7.00am.

in all honesty its impossible to say. simply bbecasue you would be going clockwise on the m25 past heathrow ,and m4 interchanges.. and some days it can be a straight run, other days if theres a trafiic problem you could be stuck for hours.
i would prefer the scenic route going northhampton, oxford, abingdon, newbury route.

not sure if this will work

thanks Dean , thats what I'll do.

Don't be silly!

Northampton ... not on the weekend of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone! :runaway:

Frankly, avoiding any traffic heading into Northamptonshire will be unlikely whichever route you take, though A1 is probably better until you are south of Bedford then head across country as you will be going against any incoming...or of course, get to bed now and leave at 4am ;)

i dont follow motorsports so wasnt aware it was on.
going the M way route you have to nav past M3, M40 and M4 plus tackle M25 around heathrow... not a prospect id like to tackle at any time of the day or night let alone getting down the A1 in the first place.. dont envy your journey whatever route you take

exactly!! It is not going to be fun. The M25 has been murderous this week for some reason, I spent WAY too long on that stretch yesterday, and I have spoken to a few that have the same all week. No idea why, no specific issues causing the problems, just one of those things. I wasn't totally joking when I said go to bed now and leave at 4am, it'll be getting light and it will probably be the best hour to travel, even if you end up having a nap in the car at the other end.

The M25 should be fine tomorrow morning at that time, it's Saturday after all. Given the two choices I'd usually go A43, but as mentioned what with the GP this weekend at Silverstone, I'd be looking to avoid it at the time you'd be passing it. I know, I'm going to watch the race on Sunday!

It's raining all day tomorrow down here so shouldn't be hugely busy.

A34 can be a bit of a mare on weekends though.

I'd do M25 personally just hit it early enough. Especially as the A43 area around silverstone will be rammed.

I wasnt being silly, I dont follow motorsport so wouldnt have known about Silverstone.

We will just do the London route, no rush and a nice place waiting for us when we arrive.

Glad you're still awake to see this. (n)

Effectively Northants is closed tomorrow! Like Yorkshire! ;)

come off the M27 at Junction 3, take M271 to end, then follow signs to ashurst... you'll miss the congestion around Lyndhurst if you're going to Lyndhurst/Brockenhurst/Beaulieu/Lymington areas

I didn't realise that it was this week-end either.
There goes the M1, A5, A508, A43 etc :(

what to get to the m3 ? i dont think so ( unless going round for another lap )

Joining the totton bypass at the end of the 271 can be a bit hectic with traffic leaving Southampton.

Might as well come off at M27 J2 and head toward fawley the turn right for beaulieu area .

Frankly neither of ms satnavs choices will be pretty.
Load up some good music, top up the patience tank and just go with the flow.
And enjoy the New Forest!

lol i meant anti clockwise!

unless of course you end up going via cambridge, down the m11, and then clockwise around m25 to cobnham then a3 and a31 to winchester!

This is probably about right! When we don't have a time schedule to keep, we will often arm ourselves with a good old fashioned map and meander our way to our destination via B roads, enjoying the scenery and even stopping to take photos as and when we see something lovely.

what would a girlie need a map for ?? not for directions thats for sure :p

Too late now, but leave an hour earlier :) I would definitely take the M25, M3....Came back yesterday from the west and it was mad Oxford way, so much so that I shaved 1.5hours of my journey by taken the M25 against personal perception on a friday afternoon...

Enjoy the New Forest, lovely part of the country...

Oh and don't know when you come back, but the RHS will be on and you may want to avoid the M3/M25 interchange on your way back ;)

We are here, not a single hickup or traffic jam. Had to navigate around the horses in the road but it's a beautiful place.

It certainly is.
Have fun!
