I've seen photos of (usually classic) cars where the bonnet is translucent and the engine visible beneath. Presumably done from combining an image with the bonnet up with another with the bonnet down, and in pp masking/layering. Presumably this can only be done with front-opening bonnets.

Can anyone help me with a) settings to use on the camera and b) what tricks to use in pp in order to achieve this effect ?

Settings - All manual, on a tripod, maybe expose the bonnet shot for the bonnet rather than the surroundings as it won't be used so doesn't matter if blown.

PP - Photoshop, bonnet up photo on top, layer mask of just the engine bay, mess around with extra layers, blending modes etc until you like how it looks, done.

Not a complicated method particularly, more time spent messing with it the better it will look, I go for the lexan bonnet style, trying to keep reflections/bonnet shape in. I usually keep the badge solid if there is one though.

I have done a couple like this in the past. Like Digitalize said you need 2 photos from a tripod one bonnet up and one down. On photoshop have the bonnet up pic on the bottom layer and photoshop the bonnet out. I left the edges of the bonnet and use a blended eraser to get rid fo the centre of it.
