Transferring images from card to Mac?

I'd like to know what is the fastest way to transfer images from either a SD/CF card to my 2011 Mac.
The 'connectivity' of my Mac is:
USB 2.0
Firewire
Thunderbolt
SDXC card port

Which has the fastest tranfer speed of the above, that I can actually use? (ie, is there a CF/SD card reader with either firewire or thunderbolt cable??)

SD card via the slot in the Mac.
I use the camera as a CF card reader and just connect that to the Mac via a USB cable.

I've no idea on transfer rate.

Probably the quickest way is via a thunderbolt reader. However overall speed can be dependant on speed of the card you are using. In all probability using the built in card SD reader on the Mac will be fine if you can limit yourself to SD cards.. Prsonally I use a Lexar CF/SD USB 3 external reader, as I have both CF and SD cards. I don't think using normal cards you'll see much difference going to Thunderbolt, plus USB3 readers are a lot cheaper
