Hi all,
Wife's getting a new win 10 pc, what are your recommendations for transferring files from old Vista machine to win 10 machine?
She's got loads of photo's, large Itunes collection and loads of documents
Is it worth getting an external drive and offloading from one to the other or is there an easier method?
Thanks

An external drive will work well & give you a backup in case of accidents. Otherwise you can buy a caddy to put the orignal HDD in to copy across directly.

If you are scrapping the old pc ( assuming its a pc and has a spare drive bay ) which it should have just put the old hdd into the new pc win 10 should see it ,you will just have to make sure it boots from the correct drive

What kind of backup solution do you have?

If it works - connecting both to your router with cat 5 cable should allow you to set up a mini network and then just drag / drop files / folders.

Having said that there may be problems getting Vista and 10 to talk to each other.- I've never tried this.

I used synctoy to back up the old pc & copy over my documents, music, emails into outlook, worked fine, keep doing incremental backups regularly onto your external hdd & you're sorted

We have a Nas drive , but only back up files manually- no automatic back-up

I would copy all your stuff up to the NAS then and transfer it from there, that way nothing is changed, risk of damage etc.
