Running 64 bit Windows 7 on one PC and 32 bit XP on an other.

I have files and favourites etc. that I want to transfer from XP to W7.

W7 has Microsoft Easy Transfer and I can download it on to XP then link the PC's with the appropriate USB to USB cable.

From what I have read there could be issues with one machine being 64 bit and the other 32 bit.

Before I buy the cable can anyone confirm whether transferring from 32 bit XP to 64 bit W7 will work.

Thanks

Dougie

Files are OS size agnostic so it will work. You will need a USB bridge cable to back-to-back them via USB, not just one with two USB connectors.

Thanks, Andy. I know the type of cable you mean.

Are the two machines on the same network (i.e. connected to your router?) If they are you can transfer the files without downloading anything by just creating a shared folder on one of the PCs and connect to the shared folder from the other PC?

Here are some useful links

There should be no problems with the 64bit/32bit difference. Unless the files you are transferring are application programs(executables) that will only run in one of the systems (64bit or 32bit).

If you use a network to transfer the files I can assure you there will be no problems due to different operating systems. I do it all the time on my home network.

Or use a usb flash drive or hard drive. Many many ways of doing it without spending any money.

Yes, Dini and all. Both PC's are connected to the same router with ethernet cables. W7 machine is a very recent addition. Never got round to having them both linked up simultaneously yet. If they can talk to each other then that will provide a good means of backing up files as well as transferring what I want from the XP machine to W7.

Neil, just out of interest because I prefer hard wired links to radio, but is the wireless problem one of frequency confliction ?
