Hi all

I have sorted out some holiday short videos of use on the Android phone i.e. mp4 files. NB I converted some .mov to MP4

However, I would really like to put them on the OH's iPad 2 as well.

So, what file format would be most suitable and equally importantly how do I get them onto the iPad?

Ideally, I hope that using a suitable cable I can attach a USB stick to copy the files across.

TIA for any guidance on this subject :)

For file transfer you could use google drive l, onedrive or dropbox. Or email them to yourself.

The iPad 2 is really old, so you'd probably need an original Apple Lightning to USB adapter, which isn't cheap for a single-purpose gadget.

@eoSimon's idea is much better. If not as quick as a direct copy through the adapter, it's almost certainly quicker than getting the adapter would be.

Hmmm! the file sizes are prohibitive for emailing but wonder if WeTransfer might work i.e. via a download link?

Yes, older kit and eol OS .

I wonder do either of you know about the file format being best to ensure the iPad 2 will play them?

iPad 2 doesn’t have a lighting connection (iPad 4 was the first to have one), but instead has the 30-pin dock connection. So the Lightning to USB adapter won’t work.

First thing I’d try is to see if it’s possible to install a working version of Dropbox on the iPad and go from there.

Get yourself a YouTube channel and upload them there.

There are loads of options for keeping them private or sharing them with whom you choose.

Also YouTube works across Android and Apple with ease

So far WeTransfer is a pain ...
On the iPad the page for download would not load, though this might be down to the cookies settings ?
On her laptop......it is downloading like such a thick milkshake through a narrow straw  :headbang:

I will have to look into this because as you say if I can restrict access to family & friends that might be more suitable.

One of the issues you are facing is that the iPad 2 is now very much a 'legacy' device and limited to iOS9, so it may well struggle with things like connectivity and web-based functionality.

I've just looked it up and Dropbox apparently no longer supports iOS9 and needs iOS12 as a minimum. So getting a functioning app onto your device looks unlikely.

I ran into similar kinds of issues a few years with an iPad 4, so picked up an iPad Air3 which works well, but even that is now getting a bit 'long in the tooth' as iPads go.

I wish you luck, but it may be that it's time to move to a more recent iPad.

The YouTube option suggested by @Milo King looks to be worth checking out.

Perhaps you could try iTunes to transfer the files assuming you can connect the iPad to your computer.

It does look, even though the iPad 2 is still functioning well, that a more up to date small tablet would be a good idea!

The additional factor is that we have the The Daily Telegraph app subscription on it but they are putting the last element of the crossword into the supplemental "games app" and we learned a while back that 'it' was not compatible with the iOS version i.e. not backwards compatible :headbang:

We like the games section but with the crossword going is especially annoying.

So, as I am 100% out of touch with Apple, what is the more current small tablet (akin to iPad 2 Mini) in the Apple 'eco system ' that will not cost an arm & leg?

TIA:)

Depends how expensive your arms and legs are. You can get an iPad Mini 5 for around £200, or less for a refurb these days. Just google "iPad Mini 5" and click the Shopping tab.

A quick read....first release in late 2019 so 5 years on. I will need to find out it's iOS version and how long it will be supported with updates.

The iPad 2 Mini is the WiFi version with IIRC 32gb storage

I will continue to read up, thanks again for the heads up (y)

I’d get the current 10th generation iPad 10.9” as I prefer the bigger screen and at just over £300 is IMHO good value (not something often said about Apple).

However if a mini is what your OH is after, then with 7th generation expected in October, there will be bargains for the outgoing 6th gen models.

Thanks for the insights.......

We will have to have a chat about it and see what she wants to do

Looks like the iPad Mini 5 uses the A12 chip and is compatible with iPadOS 17. The iPad Mini 6 has an A15 chip, and will presumably have a longer life.
