I have often thought about doing a little training but have never done so. Well I have a bigger birthday due later this year and thought it could be a good gift for the family to chip in for.

It would need to be portraiture based, either studio or outdoor. What recommendations have you?

I would recommend Aspire training.
I did a two-day wedding photography training package a few years back, courtesy of my good friend @Robbi who won it in a competition.
Thoroughly enjoyable and packed with information and practical skills.

I've had a few bits of training. The best have always been 1-1 and tailored to my needs.
You could look at either technical lighting skills, or alternatively at core portraiture and interaction skills. On the latter subject I had a great day with Jo of http://summerlovephotography.co.uk/blog/training/ who is a genius at getting natural reactions from people.
