I have been asked to cover the Red Rose British chamionship nr Rochdale this sunday.. never done it but looks fun..in a quarry.. Any tips.. Anyone else going?
Try not to get covered in mud........think about where to stand, backdrop etc. How good is your panning technique? You might need ear plugs too as they can be very noisy.
Because it is near Rochdale - KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR GEAR......

Often large parts of the 'course' may be in the shade of trees so light may be limited - I have taken pictures of a few and found a wide angle lens and flash worked best, and be prepared to get muddy yourself as you will need to get in very close, and there is nothing by way of safety barriers. The guys (and girls) who take part seem to be very friendly and are happy to perform for a camera, so it is easy to stage any shots you miss. The sidecars are what I enjoyed most - in part as they were easier to shoot and the course was tighter, meaning I could be in position for more of it.
I ended up getting taken around a few sections as pillion and being shown where to stand, so getting there really early and walking the course with some riders will pay dividends. Have fun !
Get there early, just to meet some of the riders, find out where to be and the like. There is no practise as such, as they do not race - it is all about points scored for putting your feet down - the fewer points the better. A 'clear' means no foot contact, therefore no points - Good !
The ones I have been to seem to end mid afternoon, and there is often little action early on bar walking round the course and a few riders having fun pulling wheelies and the like - all good potential material. Knowing who is worth watching and where has to be worth an early start no matter how heavy your Saturday evening is !
Just back.. had three hrs there.. got the two lcoal riders and some bigger shots wiht crowds so paper will be happy...
It was all quarry stuff up and down rocks with slightly different courses for pro riders.. extra rocks some straight upwards.. just slight changes to the course..
All the sections looked samey so i picked a good spot right between three sections. I am well happy with the shots..
nearly everyone had a camera but only a couple of us with hi-viz on which where required when i signed in.. so guessing most didnt sign in as photogrpahers..
i feel like a nanny goat.. my legs are all sore from climbing and my legs being at funny angles..
Will be doing pics late this evening as off to another job now.. just popped home for brew and change of gear
