Hi folks,

Basically i would like some advice in choosing a lens as there are SOOOO many around and i'm pretty confused!

I'd like a nice sharp zoom lens to be an all rounder. Will be shooting all sorts from my kids, to animals/wildlife, to landscapes (just as a hobby :)

i'm after something that gives nice crisp images but isn't too expensive. (pennies aren't great at the moment as i'm also after a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC - if anyone knows of any for sale)

i've been looking at canon, sigma and tamron but really dont know!! do i go from an 18mm 55mm 70mm to 200mm 300mm???? (sorry, i'm a noob lol)

any advice is greatly appreciated :)

(sorry if you guys have answered this question zillions of times before, i just need a push in the right direction) :thinking:

ps lens will be fitted on Canon 50D
 
What does "pennies aren't great at the moment" convert to in a real budget?

Landscapes tend to be wide angle, portraits tend to be 50-100mm, wildlife - generally as many mm as you can get.

Are you after something to cover 50+mm given you are after the Tamron or to cover a wider range?

sorry, i'm a bit vague in my posting there!

i think 50mm+ yes.

budget after getting the tamron will probably be around £250 absolute max. anything much less than that would be miles better though ;)

i guess what i should've asked is what would be the best cheap tele lens?

(i do have a canon EF 80-200mm but it just isnt all that great IQ wise)

The logical step is a 70-200 f4L, but if you need low light you could look at the Sigma and Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 versions.

Look no further than the Canon 55-250mm IS, remarkably good lens for the money

I bought one as a stop gap cheap from a friend and still haven't replaced it, seems to be a big step up in price before you get something that much better

Admittedly I don't use anything that long very often, but don't think you will beat it for the money (circa 150 quid)

Ooops, seen your budget. It has to be the Canon 55-250 or maybe a 28-135. :)

Not sure what you'd get for that if you sold it second hand, but a second hand 70-200f4L should be obtainable for £350-£400. They are as sharp as anything, but no IS.

If you want cheaper, Canon 55-250 IS seems to be where it's at.

f2.8 zooms (whoever makes them) are reasonably heavy things to carry around....
 
55-250. But if you can stretch to £300 you could get a used EF 70-300 IS (not 75-300).

That's a really good lens, not far off L grade, plus it has IS.
 
70-210mm f/3.5-4.5 USM won't be as sharp as the L equivalent, but certainly good enough to get started, has real USM, and is much better optically (on crop) than anything else at that price range. Get the L if you can...
