Tomorrow I am likely to go for a quick trip to the local shop to see some cameras.
I spent the last month trying to understand what kind of camera I would like, and now I am ready to see some in the "flesh".
I am mainly oriented towards a good compact camera, something I can easily take around with me. It's funny because a few months ago I was all DSLR or nothing...how things change!

I will keep you posted on my findings.

Hi

Welcome to TP.

All the best with you trip, hopefully you get one that you like.

when looking a camera prices don't forget they may not include the memory card, so add that to your budget and possibly a spare battery. also understand what is meant on a memory card, not just the memory size (G/B) but also the MB/s speed. if unsure ask the difference in the shop.

I may well be wrong but I don't think compact cameras record in RAW only Jpeg but as i say someone on here may well correct me.

You are wrong.

AFAIK, all digital cameras record the images in raw, but many compacts don't give you the option of saving the raw file. It's automatically converted to JPEG by the camera's software using the default settings, or whatever you've selected.

Thanks for the advice guys. I ended up going for a quick look today, a sort of preview of the trip tomorrow, when I will go together with my wife :)
I didn't see as many camera as I would have wanted to...
The GR II was without battery, so I did have much chance to try the controls.
The other two interesting (for me) cameras they had were the RX100 (very good price on the Mk1), and the LX100. The first is smaller than I thought, the latter larger.
Of course the LX100 comes £200+ more expensive than the Sony, so I am not sure I can make a comparison bewtween the two...
Honestely if the RX100 had a simple way to access the manual focus, I would have probably purchased it on the spot.
The LX100 looks and feel fantastic, I really like to have all the dials and knobs well exposed. It's pushing the concept of compactness to the limit though....

I think it's worth thinking about how much compactness you really want. You may want a genuinely shirt or trouser pocketable camera? Or maybe one that'll fit in a coat pocket?

Once you get larger than a trouser pocketable camera a small camera bag might be a good idea as if a camera is only coat pocketable what do you do when you're not wearing a coat? :D If you decide that carrying a small camera bag is acceptable your list of possible cameras will lengthen and might even include an LX100.

Well, yeah, sort of, though I'm not sure it's really terribly meaningful or helpful to say that "all digital cameras record the images in raw".

Perhaps a slightly better way of putting it is that all digital cameras collect data on the sensor, which they then process to turn into an image. DSLR cameras give you the option of putting all the unprocessed sensor data into a file and saving it like that (a RAW file), but many compact cameras don't.

I think it's, perhaps, a bit more meaningful/helpful than your previous post which just said 'You are wrong'. :p

A lot of us refer to 'shooting raw' and cameras that can 'shoot raw'. That's probably good enough for most purposes.

You are right.
Currently I have a DSC-W320 (as pocketable as it gets) and an Olympus SP100, which is not pocketable at all...

I don't expect a camera to necessarily fits in the trousers pocket, but I question the sense of a compact camera that doesn't. I mean, if I take a camera that still requires its own bag, why not to take a mirrorless...? There is not much difference in size between a Sony a6000 and the LX100. The Nikon 1-J5 is actually smaller than the LX100.

I am a bit confused right now. On the one side I can get a RX100 mk1 for a very good price, on the other side I can make the big leap and get a LX100 or...a mirrorless! Ahhhh, confused :runaway:

Hi.
Im a very new starter to photography and would like some advice? I've bought a decent second hand canon eos 500d from my trustworthy local camera shop. I've been out with it a few times this last few weeks and im already looking at other lenses. Especially macro. Ive been looking on ebay and found a cheap alternative. Would it fit my camera though? Its a stigma DL hyper zoom?
Any help will be appreciate.

local shop to see some cameras

Well, I'm amazed right from the very start.... you mean you found a SHOP? It was local? I must be in a time warp!

All the best with your choice and photography.

You mean Sigma. and it should say what that lens you have seen will fit. If not ask the seller.

...I'm afraid I didn't get the joke
Are shops such a rare thing? To be honest I wasn't impressed with their range of cameras...but at least I got to see some.
It's quite important for me the feeling with a camera and controls (as for everyone I would imagine).

Once upon a time every other major town in the UK had a camera shop - now, not even all major Cities have one. And I'm only talking 10 years ago!

Eheh, I am a beginner too (in this forum, not in others) but I would advice to open a new thread to post your question. This for three reasons 1) you get more visibility and increase the chance of getting a relevant answer 2) you avoid creating confusion in a pre-existing thread (never a good idea to have more than one topic per thread 3) you make it easier for other users to read in this and your thread so that can look for answers without opening a new discussion

I don't mean to be pedantic, you are more than welcome to keen on posting on this thread, but I believe you would get more changes of getting an answer elsewhere ;)

Ohhh, I see.
Well, I live in Glasgow. There is a wee Jessops shop in the city centre.
As I said it's not a fantastic display of cameras they got there, but it's better than nothing.

I was going to say that. Thanks for saving me the time.

And, @Gaynoric, welcome to TP!

Mh....not sure what place you are talking about. Is it a place in the East End?

ERM it was a typo error. I did mean sigma! Haha and yes I've already asked the seller but she's selling for a dead relative so cannot ask them. Yes my local camera shop is less than 20 mins away and he's a good sort who knows his stuff it seems. Id ask him but he's away so again cannot. Any advice welcome as a newbie (seriously not fond of that title) mm mm
Anyway im waiting eargely folks
