Tokina 11-16 and Hoya CPL Question?

Afternoon all is I've mentioned in another thread I've just bought a Tokina 11-16 with has a Hoya UV filter fitted and then I bought a Hoya CPL and a 10 Stop filter to take on holiday but I tested the CPL today and you can see quite bad vignetting! Should I be removing the uv filter first or is it just the CPL won't work on this lens as it's so wide?

CPL's can have an effect on ultrawide lenses where you don't get the same degree of polarisation across a very wide area of sky and this can look like vignetting.

I would suggest you 'zoom' the lens to 16mm to see if you still get the vignetting and if not then thats your answer.
 
There are some great things in life, but some should really not come together. The same more or less applies to your lens and filter

I am also a bit shocked that you can't take them on and off to check (1 min job tops!!!) and resort to asking here instead.

Why should my lens and filter not come together?

Is that not what this web sites for .... Asking questions?

Anyway thanks for you help it was worth while you replying oh and just for the record I quickly put the filter on took one shot before leaving for an appointment and asked the question while sat in the waiting room

I found I got vignetting on my 15-85 lens using a polariser on top of my other filter. It turns out I could have paid a fair bit more and got a slimmer 'pro' filter, and maybe if I'd taken the UV one off I'd have got less vignetting. (it was years ago and I think I did try this). At 11-16 you're going even wider, so I'd guess you're even more likely to get vignetting.

As suggested you can try only using the polariser, but i used to just zoom in a bit, or else know that I was going to have to crop the photo afterwards. At 16mm I suspect you may have to resign yourself to cropping the vignetting out afterwards, but maybe your filter profile is very slim. Try it. :)

Many people don't use UV/protective filters because they degrade the optical quality - there are many threads on this. Everyone has their own opinions. I like to use them for protection.
 
If I recall correctly when I used filters on my 11-16 tokina (no longer have it) a cokin style wide angle adaptor caused no issues but placing a circular screw in filter gave a little vignetting until say 13-14mm.
 
The vignetting will be worse if you use a UV filter in conjunction with a CPL on any ultra wide lens, the Tokina 11-16 being one of them. I rarely use a CPL on my 11-16 as CPLs are a bit pointless on really wide lenses due to the uneven polarisation but I do have an ultra slim B+W one which causes the least vignetting if I did have to use it.

I would never put a UV filter on any of my lenses but that is a complete different argument which is probably best left alone :-)
 
I recommend you take the UV filter off and chick it in the bin. Then test to see if the CPL is vignetting... UV filters are a waster of time, unless you ned a protective filter because you are shooting in or near water (spray) or you shoot things like rallying...

I agree with the above though, CPL's are questionable with wide angle lenses and you may need a slim version to stop it vignetting.
 
Thanks for the tip well a small update I've took the uv off and tested the CPL and 10 stop filter separately and I'm allot happier!!


Couple people have said get rid of the uv filter!
My question would be if I was shorting near water I.e. On a beach in Ibiza would you put the 10stop on first then the uv or do with out the iv all together as the 10 stops there?

You need to get this UV Protection nonsense out of your head- first minute relevant to you-
:p

If you're using a CPL or an ND filter already, you don't need to degrade image quality any more by sticking a UV filter either before or after them. Just leave it alone:D
 
I work for someone from time to time doing 3d time lapses for tv, film etc using dSLRs and he has always said to me "Why would I spend £2k on a D800, £1k+ on a lens, only to stick a cr@p bit of glass on the front?!".

He's got a point.

Glad to hear the vignetting has improved!

Just what do you think would be the point of having the UV filter in addition to the ND?
