just acquired a 100mm macro lens ,and wondering if one of the multiple led ring flashes are worth getting ,there seems to be lots of variations on e.bay ,I already have a full sized flashgun so would a ring type be overkill or useful , gonna be used for mainly going to be used for insects etc

Is there a Nikon version ?

Is there a Nikon version ?

If not the exact same thing, there are certainly several Nikon versions available under a variety of brand names - with very similar specs at the same kind of prices. Check Amazon, and bear in mind that LED-only versions are often described as flash. Americans call a torch a flash light, and a flash flash is a strobe ;)

Thanks Richard, do you have any links for decent one's as when i'm looking on Amazon I can only see the LED type, i'm not looking for high end stuff, it's just something I fancy having a try out with, it's not for macro shots either, more for the studio type portrait style photos, I already tried a Ray flash just to have a play, which is what I took the photo above with, but it's a bit awkward to hold on the camera with a speedlight fixed to it, so looking for something more compact and easier to handle

I just put 'Nikon ring flash' into the Amazon search bar under the photo section and several came up, including this Meike for £54

I have no personal experience, but often thought something like that or similar was worth a punt. Check the reviews etc and make up your own mind ;) The power output of GN14 is similar to a pop-up, plenty for macro of course and usable for fashion etc but it will be working close to full power. The potential problem there is slower recycle times.

We've got a ringflash adapter that goes over any hotshoe flashgun, it isn't perfect but it does the job, although the ISO will need to be jacked up a bit - more effective and much harder to break than the plastic ones with mirrors inside them.

I just got one of those, or rather the very similar version by Neewer. It works well  but is very much larger than a macro ring-flash, bigger than the RayFlash too, and might not give the kind of distinctive ring-flash look that TG is after (judging by the pic posted).

Calling @Sir SR - Shaheed has something similar, and it gave that 'ringflash' look IIRC.

The Orbis is the best of the handheld ones.

Wasn't the question in regards to macro photography?
Personally, I don't think that any "ring flash" is ideal... but one with two sections that can be set independently is ok (like the Meike).

That's the Neewer Roundflash, same as I have. It looks like Shaheed wrote quick Amazon review, scroll down here:

I've hardly used it TBH, not properly, but so far so good. You can hardly go wrong at £17 was my thinking, but if the OP finds the Rayflash too cumbersome, this is not the answer!

Ha!! So I did. Completely forgot about that!!

The one thing I would say is that it is quite big!!

And while I'm at it, I have the meike that you can set on both sides!!

That one looks ok Richard, may be worth a punt, the only downside to those type is they are not a full ring, so the catchlight isn't as good, I've also bought one of those fold up ones from Amazon for £17, not had chance to use it yet, but at 17 quid it was worth a punt, again though bulky and awkward to hold on the end of your lens, particularly without a tripod
