Just wondered if there was a consensus on HDR here. I've just joined the site and I'm feeling my way round slowly.

There won't be any consensus here!

Personally, I often find HDR looks unnatural and produces strange halo effects. On the other hand, when done properly, it can make a really interesting (if unrealistic) image. I'm into photography for the enjoyment - if HDR makes an image more interesting, rather than being done for the sake of it, then I like it. If it turns it into a glowing over-saturated mess, then I'm not.

Doesn't always have to look unrealistic.

I like it personally but I try not to overdo it - can look awful.

No matter how badly you HDR an image, it always seems to impress non-photographers. If that's what you're after then go for it!

Impressing people that are into photography is more difficult, but personally I think it's great when done right.

To soften harsh light:

To bring out the colours/details of a sunset:

To highlight darker areas in a very subtle way:

And yes, sometimes the completely overdone dramatic look (that so many photographers say they hate) works nicely:

It's impossible reach a consensus on HDR.

I mean on the one hand some feel that practitioners should have their cameras and computers confiscated whilst on the other hand some people feel they should also be locked in a darkened room until they repent.

You can't reconcile such diverse opinions.

Great work Tony.
Definately the right processing.
Ignore the purists on here, they seem to forget that most if not all badly done HDR's, are done people that have just grabbed the program and put the sliders on full.

This is a great image.
