Right peeps, seeing as I'm one of the many new owners of a 30D, any tips, tricks that you can give me as just looking at it, all seems familiar but different if you know what I mean?

Now before you say read the instructions, firstly I'm a bloke, so we NEVER do that, but why is are 3 settings on the / ON OFF button?

i think you will find thats for changing the aperture and things but i havent got a 30d...

Nah, you mean the spinnie wheel, I mean under the screen there is a little flick switch.

when lever is at top you can control exposure with one wheel and aperture with other when using fully manual.

You should have got a quick start guide with the camera (just for blokes:D )

First switch is the "Off"

Second is on but the big scroll wheel will not work.

Third is the one you want where all wheels work.

top tip.. turn OFF shoot without CF card... then you'll never get caught short.

Selecting the 2nd on position allows you to fubar a shot with confidence

Thanks....keep em coming

I can't think why they have that function enabled as standard, it's dangerous maan!

Buy screen protectors for the rear and top lcd screens

Well, you will, but rather than spend all day shooting without realising....you'll only be limited to getting all the way to the venue, then realised your card is in the reader at home  (Not that I did that last week....honest)

Cheers Steep, just done that about an hour ago.

Its sounds very cluncky when the shutter goes, nowt like the 350d's clicky, mesters camera

In custom functions you can choose what you want your "set" button to be used for when you're not in a menu....I have mine set to choose quality as I regularly switch from jpeg to Raw

Oh - and LEARN the sequence that the AF points select in when you change them......makes it much quicker if you don't always go the wrong way first!

Just found the continuous shooting (H) option......wicked

What settings do you use for the 'Picture Style'? Has anyone teaked them to suit

Also what firmware are you at, mine is at 1.0.4

I usually have mine set to Neutral or faithful or something.....but also have a ready-prepared custom one with slightly more saturation for rugby matches on dull days!

Firmware? God knows!

Yeah - I remember that "Oh My God!" moment!! I still forget to turn mine off after I'm done at speedway and get a shock next time I press the button though!

Custom Function 4, change it from 0 to 1.

It changes the buttons so that the * button on the rear of the camera becomes the focus button, and the shutter button halfpressed becomes the exposure lock..... It's the way the big boys do it :D

Set button, I have set to Quality.

Picture style I have set to Neutral, but I shoot in RAW anyway, so it doesnt matter.

Firmware is 1.0.3 because thats what was on it, but I looked at what was changed in 1.0.4 and I don't need to upgrade.

latest firmware is 1.0.5 (it's very easy to upgrade)
I use Standard 5,0,0,0 and also have download and installed 3 custom styles from canon Autumn Hues , Emerald and Clear. Why anyone would use the clear one is beyond me as it make every shot look crap (I must take it off soon  )

Also Custom Function 16 Enable (Safety Shift in Av or Tv)

Except when the big boys use their remote release cord and wonder why the autofocus doesnt work!!! :D

I use exp lock all the time from the standard button and don't find any problem with it - I would, however, be totally lost if the shutter button pressed halfway didn't lock the focus!

Ditto - Good idea, but changing that aropund for me would take me years to get used too :)

It does take a little while to get used to, but I promise once you've done it, you wont look back....hehe. Every now and then I try and go back to how it used to be (or shoot in auto...only for a quick snap of something, mind), and its wierd getting used to it

There's no point in me shuffling out of that one! (/hangs head in shame)
