My current camera bag Lowepro Mini trekker AW seems to be squeezing all my gear and definitely it's time for an upgrade but this time I should also be able to carry the bag on the plane with a 15.4 inch laptop stuck along.

Any suggestions/advise is appreciate.

Funny you should say that, as I just got myself a mini trekker AW last week. I can just about get the gear I need in it for a day's shoot, but it's very tight. The way I figure it is, if I got anything any bigger, and tried to carry anything more it really would be way too heavy! It's already bad enough as it is (that's with 2 bodies, 2 big fat lenses, 2 small lenses a flash unit, a few filters and bits.)

Hehe - literally upgraded from my Mini Trekker AW last week for the very same reason.

Now have a Tamrac Cyberpack 8, which fits in my 15.4" Compaq Presario laptop, plus everything else I need for a shoot at a nature reserve. It's a HUGE bag though, not intended for cabin luggage, but great nonetheless for taking everything you need on a day shoot.

I'll soon be choosing a bag to take to the Pyrenees suitable for flight but not too bulky for cycling with it on my back.

Cheers

I believe the laptop stays in the front than back?

Mind telling which dealer you may have bought it from?

Laptop has a compartment at the back of the bag, near shoulder straps.

Got it from Warehouse Express. Someone on Ebay is selling one for £109.99, plus £8 postage, but if you contact him, he'll probably throw the postage and shipping in free...Just enter a search and it'll come up..User ID has neil within it IIRC.

Hope this helps.

AW300 is on offer in Jessops at the moment, decent Size too

I got a Tamrac Adventure 9 from Digital Depot - they have some money off at the moment and I'm pleased...

(Apart from telling the guy behind the counter that it had money off, him not believing me, and me having to pay full price....grrr)

Cheers

Crumpler Pretty Boy Laptop Photography backpack.

fits this:

17" widescreen Macbook Pro
Nikon D50 with 18-200VR attached
Vivitar Flash
Nifty Fifty
Filters, Rocket Blower and other accessories
Ipod and headphones
+ still space for maybe one more lens.

'bag' space above lets me fit loads of stuff in it too - Charger for both camera and laptop, A5 notebooks, pencil case, bottle of water etc etc.

Brilliant bag, fits everything I need it too and everything is well protected. Plus you should have no problems getting it onto an aeroplane

I think this month's Digital SLR User mag also has a review on camera bags, though don't think it's as comprehensive as the link you've given...

The Tamrac Expedition range are super comfy bags with plenty of sternum padding and come in different sizes, with the 8 being the largest IIRC..

Hmmmmm. Like the Expedition 8. Looks nice, big enough & sturdy and also holds upto a 17" lappy.

Now will the airlines allow it, both budget & otherwise?

Anyone's got one of these and were stopped on a flight as a carry-on luggage?

I took my expedition 8 to Malta last year as hand luggage on BA.....

Unlike Lowepro's AW series built-in raincovers, I think a separate rain cover is needed in this case which costs extra?

It does, true, but the Cyberpack has a corded stormflap. Not saying the bag itself is completely waterproof, but I'd certainly use it without raincover in moderate rain.

Re the laptop compartment, there is loads of foam padding between the camera compartment and the very back of the bag. I'm very careful when it comes to protecting expensive equipment such a laptop etc. but had no hesitation in trusting the padding this bag has and my judgment has proven to be correct on this.

I think that is the camera bag Practical Photography are giving away when you take out a subscription to the magazine.

If I buy anymore camera bag I won't need a new bag but a team of sherpas!
