As I watched my EF-S55-250IS lens falling to the floor last night and unable to do anything to prevent it :'(:'(.... AARRGGHHH!!!!!. I was in the process of setting up the camera and fitting my telescope adapter and I knocked the lens. It fell, bounced and came to rest. The outer casing appears undamaged. The lens elements themselves seem undamaged and the view through the lens is as before. The aperture appears to open and close all the way. The IS works and IQ appears to be unaffected in pictures taken with it since. Are there any further tests you can suggest or recommend I try please ?

Take photos along the zoom range at differing apertures and focus distances.

If it seems ok thank your lucky stars(pun intended)

Cheers Psifox... I'm counting them... I seem to have quite a few... Apart from my inability to keep even an IS lens still at 1/6s (not a big surprise really :D ) the images are all fine... Phew...

Ouch! I know what you mean about time standing still, I caught my camera strap at the wknd while picking my camera up and it flew out of my hand down to the hard brick floor that I was standing on... it bounced... and thankfully like yours it all seems ok. Only had the kit lens on at the time, had it been my 55-250IS I would have probably had heart failure!

You reminded me that I had read something somewhere a while back about a lens test chart, so I just looked it up:
http://diglloyd.com/diglloyd/free/sleicher-res-chart/index.html

I haven't used it yet but I have seen it mentioned a few times and I've been meaning to do some tests as I seem to have some focus issues with a lot of my shots (probably my eyes though!)

Hope this helps, and hope your lens is ok mate.
Phil

Thanks Phil. It does indeed seem to be ok, there's a lot of lucky stars around. Glad you gear is ok too, and thanks for the chart... I'll give the lens a test with that at some point soon.

Thanks Len

Ok, just tried it and that's worked fine. I seem to have a little extra play at the short end of the lens, the focus ring in manual, when wound in, will turn the zoom barrel slightly, but that appears to be it.

Had my 100-400 bounce on a tiled floor when someone moved my bag for me. Thought it was a goner, but no, all I had was a damaged filter on the front, and everything else works fine

Lenses seem to be made a lot stronger than we sometimes think

That they do Chappers, glad your's is ok.

My old 80-200 did the same thing. It fell out of my bag onto a concrete floor, about a 2-3 ft drop. I felt my entire life drop through my arse. It all looks to be working fine, although the auto-focus seems to be a bit more laggy than it used to be, but maybe I'm imagining things. I still wonder if it's worth sending it in somewhere to have it checked out.

Ouch... Welly.

Eeeek, hope the lens is ok mate! The only other thing I'd need to check if it had happened to me, would be my underpants!

It certainly seems to be ok Lee. Thanks.

i know what you mean when you say time stopped i dropped my camera a few days after getting it (1000d so not a really expensive camera). but its such a bad feeling seeing it falling and hitting a car park floor.

edit: btwmy camera was fine only a slight mark on the outside of the body. but the lens and the camera all work fine.

and knowing that even as you watch there's naff all you can do about it. I hope the 1000d is all ok Matt...
