Hi Guys. I’m looking for an upgrade DSLR body. Currently I have a Canon 450D. I am thinking about a Canon 7D or a 60D…. what would you buy if you had that option.

Thanks

700 pound is my limit i think. but can stretch a little bit more if it means getting a 7D. My main focus of photography is nature, architecture and general outdoors stuff.

Well...
They have the same sensor, the 60D is very much a poor man's 7D.
So it all depends on your budget and what you want to photograph.

That's a bit unfair IMVHO. To me they're just different cameras aimed at slightly different markets.

The 7D seems to be aimed at people who want a responsive camera with a clever focus system whilst the 60D is more of a general purpose camera... but it does have an articulated screen which will be a factor for some.

Personally if I was choosing between these I'd go for the 60D.

LOL - I guess I asked for that :)
I still have my 60D and it's a very good camera.
The 7D is a lot more money for exactly the same sensor, but better build quality and vastly improved AF; so I'm going to stand by my comment.

Worth noting that there is nothing cheap feeling about the 60D build and ergonomics - I rated them highly.

But if the OP wants/needs that fancy AF then he's got to go for the 7D :)

To me money wouldn't come into it unless one was a lot more expensive and in this case (to me personally) the 7D isn't prohibitively beyond the 60D cost wise. To me it'd just be between the spec of the two.

To me the supposed build quality of the 7D really wouldn't be a factor, what we're really talking about here is the assumption that the 7D's chassis is better and able to withstand use and abuse better than the 60D but I suspect that's mostly prejudice and man needs magnesium fetish, and I have no evidence that a 60D wouldn't be equally robust or at least adequately robust. I've never broken a camera and I still have cameras made of plastic from over 40 years ago. Not that the 60D is made from that same plastic, it isn't.

I don't need a super fast camera or a top of the line focus system as I use the centre point 99.99% of the time and all of my SLR's and DSLR's have had adequate focus systems. So, personally I'd be swayed by the articulated screen (I don't do vid but anyone who does would I'd imagine like an articulated screen too) and I'd go for the 60D. But that's just me. The cameras are clearly aiming at different user groups.

Taking in to account what i will be shooting, im leaning in favor of the 7D. the 8-FPS is pulling me in and the size of the body too.

However can anyone who has had both (if anyone is out there) is there a difference in Image Quality? and the difference between that and the 450Ds IQ

If your budget is for a new rather than secondhand body I would be tempted to wait and see what price the 70D settles down at once the 'early adopter' price premium is removed.

despite the imminent delivery of a 5D3 I still enjoy using my 60D very much.

The flappy screen is one of the less often used features but most useful when needed, I also find that the Magic Lantern software transforms the camera.

The auto-focus is a weak point however, its not that it's bad at all but it is really a generation away from the 7D. If your after fast moving critters then the 7D may be a better option.
