Hi everyone,

As a break from my weddings this year I’ve thought about doing a little project for myself which is taking tilt shift photos of my home town, you know the ones which make it look like a model village, something a bit novel to get me out of the house.

I have both Nikon full frame and crop frame cameras and was looking for lens recommendations.

I don’t want to spend crazy amount and have seen the lens baby as an option?

Also, for anyone with experience of tilt shift, can you create the photos I’m thinking of without going to the top of a building or do they always need height to get the full effect?

Thanks in advance for any help

I can't help with the choice of a suitable lens for Nikon, Dan, as my TS lenses are Canon.

As far as height goes, it's the angle that helps give the illusion that you're after. Shoot downwards at an angle of 30-60 degrees (45 optimal) to get the best effect and avoid very short focal lengths .....45mm or 90mm work well.

Your best bet for a lens is hire a proper one

I have never tried to take the "Model Village" type shots but all the ones I have seen seem to be from an elevated viewpoint ( you can get that effect without a TS lens), TBH that really would be a waste of the lens, they can do so much more.
Before you get one do a lot of reading (https://luminous-landscape.com/focusing-tilt-shift-lenses/) they are not the easiest to use but the results are very rewarding

Cheers for the replies. Will do some good reading first thanks, I’m not going to be doing this until the spring/summer so plenty of time to have a read around!
