Are you printing from photoshop or lightroom? you can print directly no need to save a jpeg or tiff first, I'd save as a tiff it's bigger but can hold more information if your working in 16bit and will support layers.
Jpeg is compressed every time you save changes, so if your re-editing an image it's better to save as tiff or psd, if your just outputting for the web and you've finished editing that image then jpeg is fine.

I would say Jpeg and SRGB profile for printing.
Jpeg is pretty good quality, but wll lose quality the more times you re-edit and save it.
TIFF - Is a lossless format, so you can re-edit and save without losing image Quality.
Jpeg is also a lot smaller file than TIFF.
Your Best keeping the Raw file (Digital Negative) and converting to Jpeg.
If you need to re-edit just start with the Raw file again.
Others may do it different.

sounds like jpeg then which is what i have always done i print using a bespoke profile created by permajet using their paper and ink.
i just wondered if tiff would give me better iq but maybe ill stick to what i know.

My work flow is pretty much the same as Wayne's everything in Raw/DNG or Tiff in LR and then output as needed.
If it helps I did a test once where a 22Mb tiff file was as printed at 20x16 then the same file reduced to a 2Mb jpeg and printed again at 20x16 and no one has ever been able to tell the difference viewing normally.
On a slightly different note, regardless of my work flow I always produce a full size srgb jpeg of every image.
Why, well if you want your pictures to be seen after you have gone in this digital age then your children/grandchildren upon finding a bunch of ORF's,CR2, 16 bit tiff (insert your own here ) on the computer/EHD will proberly discard them like they would a shoebox full of glass or b&w negatives.
But in the age of Facebook and Twitter the jpeg is the new 6x4 print in a shoebox and more likely to survive among the none photographic.
