Throw over "hide" - Lightest weight - any recommendations

need it for a trip - lightest weight possible - just for cover

any recommendations guys

the ones at wildlifewatchingsupplies seem to be expensive for what you get - plus they don't seem to have many?

I have that hide Bill ,I find the weight fine and it packs down well, the only problem I have is when I am lying down the hood is a bit big and I have trouble with it falling in to my eyes as there is no way of pulling it in like a normal hood ,apart from that its fine

I've just ordered one last night after procrastinating for a while, i'll proof it with nikwax, although I don't intend to use it in much more than a shower.
I could've asked some of the guys on a different genre forum to knock one up but after paying for material, sorting out dimensions etc and their time, I just pressed the button on a straight purchase.

which one Tom, if you don't mind me asking

Thanks - just added it to my Xmas list and inform my son/daughter
Never mind presents. I think you need to spend more time figuring out the gender of your child! :tumbleweed:

I send my list to both - then they can fight it out

should have said son and daughter

Bill, I may be completely wrong here as it's hard to tell from reading posts, but I sense I may have upset you. There was no intention at all to be offensive or anything. Apologies if I did upset you.

Not at all Tim - I appreciate your sense of humour

Don't worry

Ref: proofing. I read elsewhere a long while back that doing so on a fabric that is not wind/wet proof woven is a waste as if the weave and material are "not right" you cannot make it shower or water proof. At that time it was to waterproof a been bag camera support.

Doesn't really matter to me anyway, I prefer water resistant to full waterproof, breathes better, dries better.
I get as wet inside a full w/proof jacket or close fitting cover such as the bag hide as I run really hot with the slightest exertion, I like the weight of the light one, almost a full kilo difference from the proofed bag.

I find mine (the medium weigh waterproof one) gets quite warm when you are inside it. I find I often use it draped over the camera/lens and tripod like an old fashioned photographer rather than get inside it. ive even used to draped over a gate and hid just behind it.

That can be a problem with them they can get a tad warm inside, I carry mine when there is a threat of rain and then mostly in the winter when it can get cold and a bit breezy on the cliffs of Cornwall where I get most of my raptor images from, mine is more to keep warm an dry than to use as a hide though it gets used occasionally as a hide, just not that often.

I want the lightest weight possible - it is to take to S Africa with me

What about making something using a camo leaf blind?

I have been looking at it on line Rob - but you seem to have to buy it in 2m x 1m sheets ......... OK the link in #5 is £70 - but it is a lightish colour and weights less than half a kilo - I know it may sound strange .... but being S Africa and knowing the places I go looking for birds ....... I'd like to be obvious to humans although obviously not to birds

This one on ebay is 56 inch by 30 inch if I've read it properly so I can see what you mean.

I wouldn't advise making one out of standard military camouflage net because it won't fold up very compactly and can snag more easily. Also more difficult to see out of.

The poncho one posted earlier will oblige you to stay even more still whereas when inside a 'bag hide' you can move your arms to control your camera without being detected.

My Bag Hide by Outdoor Photography Gear (run by two wildlife photographers) has an elasticated hole to slip over your lens. It doesn't snag and surprisingly you can see out of it very easily. It comes with a bag and is very lightweight and very compact when folded.

also standard military DPM is designed for europe - it won't be right for south africa (this is also true of most dedidicated Camo sold for the european market , like mossy oak/adantage etc..). I'd suggest getting something designed for the environment in which you are going to be ( South africa has a big hunting scene so it shouldnt be difficult to arrange to buy one from Saf supplier and pick it up on arival ... also negating the weight issue. It may even be possible to hire instead of buy as Saf patterns wouldnt be much use back in the UK
