Threats to harm....(for anyone heading to Birmingham airport or NEC)

He's been on a bridge over the M42 since 12.45pm yesterday, M42 been closed since then, if he's not well then fair enough but seems well enough to carry out the threats over a major road.....so if anyone is heading from the south to Birmingham airport or NEC make alternative travel arrangements

What a totally whimperish, impotent, Police force we have these days. All these statements apologising for the inconvenience. They appear to have far more press/public relations people on the job than officers with the wherewithal to deal with the matter in hand. Two hours - fine. But TWENTY!?!
 
What selfishness to poke fun at someone with serious mental health problems. I hope that you don't find yourself or a loved one in a similar situation in the future.

Already experienced all that first hand in the family. Also had to deal with suicide (on more than one occasion) too so I know how it feels. Selfish??? Get a grip!!

Exactly what I think, too many people don't see such issues as an illness. would you talk such a way about someone with cancer etc? Spare a few moments to think what frame of mind you must be in to stand up there with the intention of killing yourself as you feel like you have no hope of recovery left.

Yes, it is selfish. And it's unkind. All poking fun at it does serves to stigmatise mental health issues further.
 
Put one of those big air pad things under him and dart him, I've every sympathy for those with mental issues but I've got zero sympathy for those that disrupt the lives of several thousands of others...

I don't think you can have sympathy for 1, but no time for the other. Saying I have every sympathy cause he's trying to throw himself of a bridge, but no sympathy cause he's disrupting the traffic by doing so makes little sense.

I'm not sure why its taking this long to resolve, that can't be good for anyone.

On a separate note, I think not allowing humour stigmatises far further then anything else...........

Life's too short to give too much of a monkeys for me. I've learned that through several personal tragedies, mental health, suicide, cancer (as somebody else mentioned), fatal accidents (vehicular/Piper Alpha), death through alcohol abuse, drugs. I've experienced it all in my family and close friends so don't you dare tell me what's selfish and unkind. Life's pretty unkind. You deal with it your way fine. But don't dictate to me how I should.

Brash, I am going through it at the moment with one of my family members and yes we do laugh about it together as it's the way we cope, but to do it on a public forum where you don't know the person is total different in my opinion.

Please show a little respect to others who just may not see the "funny side" of the situation.
 
What bothers me is that, once he's down, he'll likely be arrested and thrown in the cells for breach of the peace rather than gotten the help he so clearly needs.

(or maybe that just happens up here?!)

Sorry to hear about your current situation. It's never easy.

That said, I don't think the fact it's on a public Forum makes any difference. Forums by definition, are for people to express their different opinions, experiences and views etc etc. We're never all gonna get on and agree, that's just the nature of things. I won't however be dictated to (within Forum rules) as to how I deal with things nor will I be dictated to as to I express my feelings and opinions or what I find funny. Many may disagree, fine no issue with that but don't tell me I'm wrong or disrespectful because of that. As I said before, life's too short and it ain't a popularity contest (which is probably just as well in my case;)).

Everyone can deal with this differently.
However, I've removed the two videos linked to as it's pretty tasteless.

That said, I do partake in black humour myself and with close friends I'd make similar jocular references, as I can differentiate the difference between making light of something and actually enjoying the abhorrent situation.
I'm also a long-time sufferer of depression so I can fully sympathise with whoever is stood on that bridge and what they must be going through to get to that stage that they feel the need to do it.

So I can see it from both sides of the fence. We can't dictate how others deal with things, but it's only fair that we are a bit tasteful about it when anyone can see it :)
 
Listened to?...I bet the people who have been talking to him for 26 hours are well pi$$ed off with listening.
If he is unwell (which I doubt as he wouldn't be attention seeking by choosing a busy motorway) then I hope the guy gets help....if he's not I hope he gets slapped with a tens of thousand police bill....in the majority of countries he be shot, removed and everyone elses life would carry on....the do gooders are making this country into Great Wimpton!!

I'd say it's more insulting to label somebody....as you have just done
 
For a start, suicide is not a mental health problem, it's a decision.
 
I have absolutely no sympathy for someone who threatens to throw themselves off a bridge into moving vehicles, be that traffic or trains
I do have sympathy for the poor person that hits them, they have to live with the selfish act for the rest of their lives through not fault
of their own

Marcel, I have no issues with you removing the videos it's your Forum (for those who didn't see them it was a couple of songs in which the word 'jump' was used, I'll not go into detail for the reasons Marcel has given). I assume by what you said you appreciated the 'black' humour I tried to portray. The problem is that this kind of humour by it's own very definition is always going to be tasteless and even offensive to some, that's really it's appeal and what makes it funny to those who have a sense of humour of that nature. My intent was not to offend as such but to infer humour from a potentially serious situation.
 
Don't worry about it Brash, most of my friends know me for being blunt but they also know that I mean no harm by saying it. Forums just get out of hand with mixed opinions etc ;)
 
Sorry Dave, it wasn't meant to be negative, I was just trying to clear the idea that some people assume that people must be 'mental' to commit suicide, it happens to those that you wouldn't least expect it, my uncle killed himself outside my dad's garage, we turned up for work when I was about 15 and he was there in the car with the exhaust piped up to a hose, you can imagine the rest.

He was totally fine, happy chippy etc but it turned out he just had enough of his ex, custody troubles with the kids etc.
 
I think people need to see the difference in people who harm, hurt and worse to themselves as they are not of "sound mind" and therefore can said to be mentally ill....there's many different ways to be mentally ill, and those who are druggies and/or attention seekers
 
Exactly, I've learned that it's usually the quiet people who are the most insecure, I know that's a bold statement but it happens to the people that you least expect which makes it a million times worse to think about. Especially with men, yes we are all hard and tough but we can also be very weak at times, my dad was assaulted as a child and this brought on several episodes a few years back but he pulled through, it's an absolute pain in the arse and I'm thankful that I've not been in that frame of mind,

Oh, I'm not worried Dave. Some folk (I'm generalising here and not pointing the finger at anyone in particular - honest) just don't like things said the way I/we see them if it doesn't fall into their little pink and fluffy, touchie, feelie world.

I doubt if many suicide victims are actually insane as you infer. Just because you have a mental illness, like depression does not mean you are insane.

Very true - and I'd phrased that very badly. I meant mental illness. I meant no offence by it.
