Afternoon Guys,

Any of you had or used a Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM and what do you make of it?

cheers

Mark

I have one I use on my D3s, and love it!!

I bought the canon one for holiday and friend's wedding few months ago and then sold it here recently. I just bought the sigma one last week, and just looking at the build quality, it's worth it!!!

I didnt get a chance to look at my shots with it yet, but i already like it better than canon. Though i do recommend micro adjustments on your camera in case the focus is not perfect...

It's a good lens. I tested mine against my Canon 50mm f2.5 which I've read is one of Canon's sharpest lenses and the Siggy was a match or better at every aperture whilst being faster to focus and more accurate and of course with a wider aperture.

The only criticisms I can make of the Siggy are that it isn't razor sharp wide open, although it may well be better than the competition, and at the widest apertures you get a bit of CA.

Mine is very sharp wide open but like with all wide av lenses there can be flaring if you're shooting something with white on black (text for example) so be careful with your lighting and it should be fine.

There is some minor CA but that can be corrected in RAW later.

Bokeh is sublime :)

I don't know why people always post about the front/back focusing issue. In the last year I've seen vastly more positive comments about the lens than ones about back focusing. I really think that it may have been an issue in previous batches but personally I haven't seen a single back focusing complaint on any of the many forums I visit, or front focusing either.

I have started to think that people comment about that issue from old posts that google throws up. Ad I'm sure we all know, it's human nature to complain more than to praise, so I think there may be more than a little lip sided thought to the problems with the lens. You can always return it anyway, if it has a problem.

On crop it may be decent, BUT AF-micro adjust may be a must with most copies of that lens.

Not with mine on my Nikon:)

Lovely lens.

I do have back focus issues with mine, when I get a spare moment it will go in for a fix but I like to have it in the bag so probably won't be until Oct/Nov. It's fine on anything with micro af adjust but I can't use it with the other bodies (not that I need to).
