Thoughts on this nas

I dont recall synology offering any preinstalled hard drive options.

Personally I'd buy the unit and drives separate, then like you say you know they're not el cheapo drives installed.

Synology as a brand of nas though are fantastic in my opinion, customer service and support are excellent and it's solid hardware too.

Was bit concerned they would be rubbish ones!

Sorry very green with nas. Would you recommend any drives?

Also bit concerned the + version might be bit of overkill for me.

What I'm aiming for is storage and my family being able to remotely access my photos. I have to date about 500gb to store (and kids are only 9 wks and 3yrs!)

I'm struggling to get my head around what affects speed of uploading/downloading to and from nas. Only just ran test on my wireless bt Internet which has 3.24Mbps download and 0.65Mbps upload

Any "explaining to a 3yr old" advice appreciated!

In my 5 bay synology I run Samsung 2tb drives and (touch wood) ive not had any bother.

Speed wise you'll always be limited by the slowest link in the chain. For example if you're accessing your nas remotely over the Internet, the internet youre on has 20mb download but your home Internet has 0.6mb upload you'll get 0.6mb transfer.

Locally, I.e. accessing the nas while at home, obviously wireless will be slower than cabled Ethernet.

Would you know the model etc of the Samsung drives you bought? Don't worry about it if the info is tucked away somewhere.
I see there are different speeds (eg 5900rpm or 7200rpm etc) and buffer mbs. Am I right in assuming these affect how quickly files can be transferred onto the drive?

Feel I'm taking advantage of your free advice with nothing in return but if you need any nappy changing tips you know where to come

I run the hd204ui drives which are 5400rpm. There is no real reason why you can't use 7200rpm to increase transfer and access speeds but you'll have a noisier unit from the faster spinning drives and they'll also run warmer so the nas fans will run faster etc.

Over a gigabit Ethernet even the 5400 work well for me, my raw files for Lightroom are on my nas I also stream films and music from it.

Not a problem, got relevant experience on this so don't mind sharing :)
 
Gigabit Ethernet will be my next lesson request another time have seen the words a lot with nas but again don't understand!

Looks like I'll be spending some money tomorrow on the synology and drives! Will update on how I get on!

Really appreciate your advice and explanations!
 
I have the ds411j with 4x2tb drives running raid 5

You can't beat them, you can do so much with them
 
I have the DS211+ and have no regrets buying it, it's a great piece of kit. I only brought the + model because I got a good deal on it, no real point paying the extra for it unless it's going to be used by many people at once as far as I can see.
 
Just a quick update bought myself the ds212 and and 2 no. 2tb hard drives!
After a day and a half I managed to get it all up and running (including setting up port forwarding on my router (Neil you would have been proud of me!) I did find it difficult but now it's set up its working great and I'm pleased with it
